Real Sociedad vs. Real Madrid: Final score 0-4, Madrid overwhelms La Real

Juan Manuel Serrano Arce

Real Sociedad played Madrid very tough, but the Blancos were simply too much for them in the end.

Real Madrid got an important win over Real Sociedad, taking the three points and remaining in touch with Atlético Madrid and Barcelona in the race for the league title. Asier Illarramendi scored against his former team and Gareth Bale secured the points midway through the second half as Madrid pulled away late for the big win.

Real Sociedad just missed a chance in the 16th minute to take a lead on a corner kick. Antoine Griezmann's flick-on at the near post found Carlos Vela at the far post, completely unmarked. Diego López made a spectacular reaction save to deny the Mexican striker, but the linesman's flag was up on the play.

La Real again came close in the 22nd minute as Greizmann's header of a Vela cross curled just over the crossbar. Even if the French winger had been able to get the ball down, it appeared that López had the chance covered.

Despite La Real being the better side, it was Real Madrid who took the lead right before the halftime break with a bit of a lucky goal. Karim Benzema's rocket from the left side was parried away by Claudio Bravo, but the rebound went right to the foot of Asier Illarramendi, who directed the ball right back past Bravo to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

Sergio Ramos came ever so close to doubling Madrid's lead early in the second half, hammering a header off the crossbar. Minutes after Karim Benzema hit the crossbar, Gareth Bale utilized a little bit of traffic to drive a shot from 30 yards out past Bravo to double Madrid's lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute.

Pepe added a third goal in the 85th minute, and late sub Álvaro Morta scored as well in the 88th to ensure that La Real wouldn't make a late comeback. The late tallies secured an important victory for Madrid as they continue to chase Atlético at the top of the table.
