Sassuolo vs Genoa, final score 4-2: Sassuolo ensure Serie A survival

Despite being pegged back twice, Sassuolo ran out 4-2 winners over Genoa and will be playing Serie A football again next season.

Three of Sassuolo's goals came from two players on loan from Genoa. Antonio Floro Flores bagged a brace, while Davide Biondini and Nicola Sansone also got on the scoresheet.  The Neroverdi have proved the doubters wrong and remain in Serie A for a second season.

Sassuolo had defensive pair Alessandro Longhi and Marcello Gazzola suspended. With Genoa safe in mid-table, Gian Piero Gasperini opted to rotate his squad.

The home side came flying out of the blocks and kept Mattia Perin busy during the first half. The 21-year-old goalkeeper caught a Domenico Berardi volley, saved comfortably from Floro Flores and prevented a wicked bounce from a Berardi shot going past him.

There was nothing Perin could do to stop Sassuolo from opening the scoring on 16 minutes. Berardi picked out Floro Flores with a long ball and the on-loan forward turned Luca Antonini, before smashing a shot into the far corner.

Simone Zaza danced past the Genoa defence with quick feet, only to fire weakly at goal. Perin needed two hands to put a Berardi curler out for a corner. From the delivery, an unmarked Berardi volleyed wide.

Sassuolo had a goal chalked off on 33 minutes. Luca Antei headed in from a Floro Flores free kick, but the defender was marginally offside.

Genoa were awarded a generous penalty six minutes before the break. Francesco Magnanelli was penalised for the faintest of shirt pulls on Sime Versaljko, as the referee ignored all protests and pointed to the spot. Alberto Gilardino had scored one and missed another in the reverse fixture, and he saw his effort kept out by Gianluca Pegolo. However, Emanuele Calaio reacted quickest to nod the rebound into the empty net.

Magnanelli tried to make amends for conceding the penalty. Five minutes into the second half, the midfielder forced Perin to parry his shot from distance and Matteo Brighi was too slow in trying to put in the rebound.

Genoa missed a guilt edged chance to go ahead less than 60 seconds later. Aleandro Rosi switched off, as Vrsaljko's ball across the box missed Gilardino and Andrea Bertolacci hit the post from point blank range.

Sassuolo re-took the initiative and pressed forward. Cabral played a poor pass which Zaza seized upon and sent a deflected shot wide. Perin began to look unsettled. The goalkeeper flew out to punch a free kick into Antei's path. Fortunately for Perin, his defenders bailed him out. Floro Flores drove a ball across the box and Zaza snuck in to fire over.

The Neroverdi did re-take the lead on 66 minutes. Biondini headed a Berardi corner underneath Perin at the front post to claim his first goal since arriving on loan from Genoa.

The away side refused to give in and remarkably pulled level again ten minutes later. A clearance fell to Cabral, whose volley was turned in by Gilardino just yards from the line. A true poacher's finish.

Sassuolo went ahead for a third time three minutes from the end. Magnanelli's cross found Sansone in the penalty box and the substitute volleyed the ball into the top corner.

Floro Flores made sure of the victory in the 89th minute, lashing in a rebound after Perin pushed out a Berardi shot. Zaza should have made it five in stoppage time, but Perin saved from close range.

The Mapei Stadium erupted into a huge roar at the final whistle, as Eusebio Di Francesco celebrated with his jubilant players on the pitch.
