2014 Championship promotion playoffs: 4 teams fight to reach the Premier League

Michael Regan

The most gut-wrenching time of the season is here. Get ready for the Championship promotion playoffs.

A dramatic final day of the Football League Championship season saw Wigan Athletic hang on to fifth place, while Brighton and Hove Albion clinched the final spot in the promotion playoffs in dramatic fashion. Reading were in sixth for a good chunk of the afternoon, but Jose Ulloa scored a winner for Brighton in the 92nd minute of their match against Nottingham Forest, vaulting them into the last playoff place.

Brighton play in the first game of the playoffs, against third-placed Derby County. Derby's biggest star is 19-year-old Will Hughes, who will likely fetch an eight-figure fee if he's sold, but he's just one of many stars in a stacked midfield. In the other playoff semifinal, Wigan play Harry Redknapp and Queens Park Rangers, who have done well to finish fourth after gutting much of their team in the summer.
