Lazio vs. Hellas Verona, final score 3-3: Lazio and Verona cancel each other out

Lazio twice went ahead, but left it really late to rescue a 3-3 draw against Hellas Verona at the Stadio Olimpico.

Deja vu struck again in Rome. For the second home game in succession, Lazio shared six goals and struck right at the death to rescue a point.

Nothing separated both teams coming in, as the two were locked together on 52 points. As it happened, nothing could separate them at the final whistle either. Both teams saw red during a tense finale and a point hinders any hopes both teams had in qualifying for next season's Europa League.

Stefan Radu returned from suspension and Abdoulay Konko had recovered from injury to start. Miroslav Klose handed the Eagles a further boost and was back on the bench after a month out. Juan Iturbe shook off a thigh injury to start for the visitors, but Romulo was only fit enough to be a substitute.

Rafael pushed over an early Antonio Candreva effort, before Lucas Biglia fired a free kick over from the edge of the box.

A catastrophic mix-up almost gifted Hellas a goal on 13 minutes. Biglia and Giuseppe Biava collided going for the same ball and Emil Hallfredsson played in Luca Toni. Etrit Berisha rushed out to close the angle and the veteran uncharacteristically lifted the ball wide of the post.

Keita stung Rafael's palms from the left-hand side, while Marquinho turned Konko with ease and curled over from 20 yards.

Lazio hit the front with a lightning-fast counter attack after half an hour. Stefano Mauri released Candreva, whose measured pass was smashed in from six yards by an unmarked Keita Balde. It was the youngster's fifth goal of the season.

The lead only lasted seven minutes. Marquinho notched his second goal in as many games with a well-placed shot from just inside the D, which nestled into the bottom corner.

Lazio had an effort ruled out six minutes before the break. Mauri headed a Keita cross across the box and Lulic's shot was blocked by Ivan Pillud. Biglia blasted in the rebound, but play was called back for Lulic's challenge on Pillud in the buildup.

Just before halftime, Keita's deflected cross from the byline almost looped into the net. The ball ricocheted around the Verona area until the visitors finally got the ball clear.

Four minutes after the break, Vangelis Moras stopped a Mauri header trickling over the line. The makeshift striker headed over a Biglia free kick, before Moras sent a towering header wide which had Berisha rooted to the spot.

Lazio retook the lead on the hour. Lulic exchanged passes with Keita, before heading past the Hellas defence and blasting the ball in from close range.

Berisha palmed clear from Hallfredsson, but Verona pegged Lazio back once again on 69 minutes. Iturbe raced past the static Lazio defence to run onto a through ball and slot past Berisha.

Lazio introduced Klose, but Verona almost went ahead on the counter. Iturbe rolled across for Toni inside the box, only for Berisha to keep out the veteran.

Toni spurned another chance when he fired straight at Berisha, while Michelangelo Albertazzi saw a header bounce off the post. Lazio suffered a double injury blow. Candreva pulled up with a leg problem and a bandaged Lorik Cana also left the field with a head wound.

Verona took the lead for the first time with seven minutes to play. Radu and Lulic both allowed Hallfredsson's cross to roll across the box and Romulo couldn't believe his luck, as the substitute was left with the simplest of tap-ins from six yards.

Lulic's night went from bad to worse when he was given a straight red for a scything tackle on Iturbe four minutes from the end. Meanwhile, Toni's luckless night continued when Berisha kept him out yet again, pushing an effort past the far post.

Verona looked home and hosed until Albertazzi was penalised for a foul on Klose deep in stoppage time. The defender was given a second yellow and Lazio were awarded a penalty. Mauri saw his spot kick saved, but the Lazio captain put in the rebound to rescue a point.

Tensions rose at the final whistle, with both coaches exchanging heated words before being ushered their separate ways.
