Klinsmann confident Altidore will return soon

The exact timeline is still up in the air, but the United States manager is confident his striker will return the in next few weeks.

USA vs. Ghana broke ESPN soccer viewership record

ESPN had already been enjoying its best ever World Cup ratings even before the U.S. played their first game.

Clint Dempsey seizes his moment

By scoring in record time and playing through a badly injured nose, Dempsey put his stamp on Brazil 2014.

Jermaine Jones was the USMNT's real hero

Clint Dempsey and John Brooks scored the goals for the United States, but Jermaine Jones was the team's real hero against Ghana.

10 very thoughtful points on the USA's win

Or: 10 things I wrote down at the bar in between heart attacks as 22 soccer players did their damnedest to kill me.

The reaction from the USMNT fans in attendance was as crazy as you'd guess.

Dempsey couldn't breathe through the nose blood

Clint Dempsey's nose is almost certainly broken after he got straight-up kicked in the face during the USA's win over Ghana. Dempsey is a beast, though, and continued to play in spite of things;

So casual. "Yeah hopefully next time one of the two organs that usually allows me to breathe will go back to doing that next time I have to play an intense sport at its highest level. If not, oh well."

Don't tread.

How the USA can get out of Group G

Want to figure out how the United States can get out of Group G? We can help.

Winning ugly is the American way

Did the United States play poorly against Ghana? No, not really. The United States played like the United States against Ghana.

The USA finally defeat Ghana

21-year-old John Anthony Brooks scored with just four minutes left to play as the USA finally defeated Ghana at the World Cup.

John Brooks is a patriot

The United States were getting pummelled by Ghana. They deserved to concede many times before Andre Ayew equalized. But it doesn't matter, because thanks to John Brooks, USA are 2-1 ahead deep in the second half.

That's the first goal ever for a USMNT substitute in the World Cup.

Please stop showing things like this. We can't handle it.

Andre Ayew equalizes

The United States have been taking a beating from Ghana for the better part of 80 minutes, and they did well not to concede for so long. But they couldn't hold out, and Andre Ayew has equalized for the Ghanians.

How about that backheel assist from Asamoah Gyan? Gorgeous.

Ian Darke a little fuzzy on the USA soccer chant

It's "I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN," but ... close enough.

Besler off at halftime with a hamstring injury

Besler was the second US player forced out of the game with a hamstring injury.

Donovan wouldn't have replaced Altidore

Please stop talking about this.

Dempsey gets kicked in the face, bloodied

Clint Dempsey scored 30 seconds into this game, and Ghana weren't particularly happy about it. They've responded by kicking him in the face, and he's bloody.

Watch this. Ow. Ow ow ow.

But Dempsey stayed in after about a minute on the sideline, because he is Clint Dempsey, and this is America.

Joe Biden, US President (per Ian Darke)

Sorry, internet commenters, he's still veep.

Altidore off injured

Well, this is awful news for the United States. While chasing a long ball over the top, Jozy Altidore pulled up lame, grabbing his hamstring. It'll be a while before the USMNT knows the severity of the injury, but it was bad enough that he's unable to continue. Aron Johannsson has come on to replace him.

Altidore has been in poor form for the United States and Sunderland, but he scored two goals in the U.S.'s final warm-up friendly against Nigeria, so fans were hopeful that he'd produce in the World Cup. He looked sharp early against Ghana, but he'll play no further part.

Johannsson is a different kind of striker than Altidore. He's quicker, but nowhere near as big. Jurgen Klinsmann likes having a target man, but the U.S. system doesn't require one -- Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey can do plenty of holding up the ball. Plus, Johannsson is in excellent form -- he scored 17 goals in the Eredivisie for AZ Alkmaar this season.

Update: Initial diagnosis is strained hamstring

A+ celebration from Klinsmann

Deuce only needs 30 seconds to score

Real recognize real, don't tread on this.

Deuce is ready to wreck fools

Everyone else is singing the national anthem. Clint Dempsey has no time for this.
