Sergio Agüero injury: Argentine attack leaves Nigeria match in first half

Jeff Gross

While it wasn't clear what happened to Agüero, the Argentina coaching staff clearly didn't want to take any risk with the attacker.

Sergio Agüero was subbed off late in the first half of Argentina's Group F match against Nigeria on Wednesday. It wasn't clear exactly what happened to the attacking player, as he ended up sitting on the ground, away from play, as Nigeria setup for a free kick.

After a short examination by team physios, Agüero was able to walk off the pitch under his own power, with just the slightest hint of a limp. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ezequiel Lavezzi took his place on the pitch.

We'll have to wait and see what the team says after the match, but based on Agüero being able to walk off the field, it appears the decision to remove him was precautionary. With a spot in the Round of 16 assured, you can't blame Alejandro Sabella for not wanting to risk further injuring one of his better attacking options.

Agüero has struggled a bit so far in the tournament in Argentina's 4-3-3 system, leading some call for Lavezzi to get the start against Nigeria.
