Belgium right back out for World Cup, defensive injury concerns piling up

Anthony Vanden Borre has a broken fibula, joining fellow Belgians Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Ciman on the list of hobbled defenders ahead of their match against the United States.

Belgium right back Anthony Vanden Borre will miss the rest of the World Cup after it was learned the had actually broken his right fibula, not just twisted his ankle in the Group H final against as was originally believed.

Vanden Borre's absence is not, in and of itself, necessarily a huge loss. The defender was only playing against South Korea because Belgium manager Marc Wilmots had decided to sit several starters, as advancement had already been secured and Toby Alderweireld will likely just slot back into his normal spot.

Of greater concern is how banged up Belgium's back line is starting to look ahead of Tuesday's Round of 16 match against the United States. Captain Vincent Kompany (groin) and and starting left back Thomas Vermaelen (thigh) have both been held out of some training sessions this week and backup center back Laurent Ciman is also being called doubtful.
