Arsenal are in pretty serious need of a striker and a central defender. So, of course, Arsene Wenger is making a massive bid for a player who is neither. According to Joaquin Maroto of Spanish newspaper AS, Arsenal made a deadline day bid of £31.7m for Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus. BVB have rejected the offer.
Reus is the type of star that any club would want regardless of their need for a winger or lack thereof, but it's very surprising that this is where Arsenal have focused their attention. They were probably short a forward even before Olivier Giroud went down, and he's out until January. They also haven't replaced Thomas Vermaelen, and have just two true senior central defenders on their squad at the moment.
Transfer deadline day
While Dortmund rejected the bid, it's probably fair to assume that Reus could have forced a move there if he was terribly interested in it. His contract has a release clause that's lower than Arsenal's bid starting next summer, and BVB just brought back Shinji Kagawa.
