The transfer window has closed and Arsenal and Manchester United have not yet finalized a deal for Danny Welbeck, but they still plan to do the transfer. The clubs have applied for an extension to finalize the move and nobody seems overly concerned that the reported £16 million deal will fall apart now.
The Welbeck saga has been rather interesting during deadline day. It looked like he was on his way to Tottenham Hotspur in the morning, with the two sides reportedly close to agreeing on a loan deal, but then the player's agent said he didn't want a loan. Welbeck wanted a permanent transfer and around that time, Arsenal entered the mix. Rumors that he was taking a medical with Arsenal started to swirl and while the Gunners denied it, they were negotiating with Manchester United at that time.
Exactly what is holding up the transfer at this point remains unclear. It could be the medical, paperwork or just some of the final details of the deal. They could not have gotten the extension if they couldn't show that the deal was essentially done so clearly they have made significant progress and Welbeck should be an Arsenal player before long.
Transfer deadline day
Arsenal went into the day needing a central defender and a holding midfielder, with a striker third on the board because of the injury to Olivier Giroud. They didn't get the defender or midfielder, but they did get Welbeck, which may disappoint some supporters, but it beats not signing anyone.
