Club America is the best team in Liga MX. Bayamon FC won the CFU Club Championship last year. Theoretically, that would mean that the clash between the two in the CONCACAF Champions League would be a heavyweight clash. Except there was one problem: Liga MX is a lot better than the CFU Club Championship.
The result: Club America 10, Bayamon FC 1.
To say that America put a beatdown on Bayamon would be an understatement. They scored in the third, fourth and fifth minutes, taking a 3-0 lead before six minutes had passed. By halftime, it was 6-0. Bayamon did score the first goal after halftime, but America responded with four more tallies.
Luis Rey had a hat trick and was overshadowed. That's because Martin Zuniga scored four goals.
And this is the CONCACAF Champions League. The best the confederation has to offer. Then again, history has told us it is Liga MX, then MLS, then everyone else, and there's a giant gap between Liga MX and MLS, then an even bigger gap between MLS and the rest.
Still, 10 goals IN A CONFEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIP.
