Everton put in an incredible performance against Manchester City on Sunday, winning 4-0. But even better than the score was what happened at the end of the match. Two Toffees teenagers scored their first career Premier League goals — Everton Academy product Tom Davies and new signing, Ademola Lookman.
If you’re unfamiliar with Davies, you’re likely to learn a lot more about him in the coming weeks. The 18-year-old midfielder scored the first professional goal of his career on Sunday with this beautiful chip:
Davies has been one of the top players in the England youth system over the past few years, becoming a staple of a team that’s had a lot of success at the Under-17 level. He’s made the step up to Under-19 internationals this season, and he’s getting rave reviews for outperforming players considerably older than him while with Everton’s Under-23 squad.
Even though Morgan Schneiderlin has arrived to boost Everton’s midfield, expect to see a lot more of Davies this season. He’s more physically and tactically mature than most players his age, and he has a little bit of everything — touch, vision, strength, work rate, tackling, and apparently finishing too.
After Davies’ goal, 19-year-old forward Lookman came on for a late cameo appearance and stunned City with a goal of his own:
Lookman just arrived from League One team Charlton Athletic for a fee of £7.5 million, which could rise to £11 million if he hits certain benchmarks. It is a lot of money for a young player from the third division, but he’s been intent on proving from the start that he’s worth every penny.
Everton’s future looks bright with these two players in the squad, and we’re looking forward to watching them develop.
