Real Madrid have taken their lumps at times over the last couple of months, and right now their margin for error is down to as narrow a margin as it gets. They have just a single point of a lead over Barcelona in the La Liga table, and even with a game in hand that’s still far too close for comfort as Real Madrid prepare to face Las Palmas on Wednesday.
The situation is this: Real Madrid can’t afford to drop any points while Barcelona are in the stronger form that they’re in. Even without Barcelona snapping at their heels, Sevilla are only a step behind. Having a lead and a game in hand is great, but if that lead disappears, then the game in hand becomes little consolation.
Even with a big Champions League match looming just a week away, Real cannot afford to lose their focus, because a team like Las Palmas has all the ability and then some that they need to create a big upset -- and Real Madrid have been far from perfect of late, as witnessed in their 2-1 loss to Valencia and a 3-2 comeback win over Villarreal in the last week. One slip, and the La Liga title race starts all over again.
