Greg Maddux on Strikeouts

3

Never try explicitly for the SO, he says: "[Maddux] was telling me, 'Don't every [sic] try to throw guys out. We want to try to get ground balls,'" [Scott] Feldman said. "He told me that's what he did. I was trying to throw as many strikes as I could, get ahead of guys. He told me strikeouts happen pretty much by accident, and that's what happened [Monday]. I guess there's a reason he won a lot of games." I hope Dave Eiland makes this one of his Eilandisms. - TL

Ptichers with ERA+ over 200 and 15 or fewer wins

Guess what? There are three in the modern era, and none of them won the Cy Young (or an equivalent "best pitcher" award), including Pedro and Clemens. Cause for concern, or just a fluke? Greg Maddux won in 1994 with only 16 wins, but his ERA+ was 271 that year.

Full Version I'm kind of surprised I'm the first one to do this: the great Braves trio by WAR. Only seasons with the Braves are included here, to get a sense of just how much the three of them were contributing when they were together. As expected, Maddux really was the ace of the staff, and he and Glavine really did have strike-zone induced down season in 1999 (I remember them getting "squeezed" that year so vividly it's like yesterday). Glavine's first Cy Young season was fully deserved, and Smoltz's Cy Young year was at least about as good as Maddux. Honestly, looking at this is just incredible. All three place in the top 20 of pitchers by WAR since 1953 and put up their best seasons together in one rotation. The Braves front three players alone were producing enough to take an otherwise average team towards the high 90s in wins. Nearly a 20 combined WAR in 1996! That is dominance. Also, I don't remember much about Maddux's 2003. What happened?! And while I have talked often about Smoltz's ability to remain amazing in his late career, looking at it in WAR terms really hits it home: he's been great at an advanced age. Really great.

This game is about personal and business, but business usually wins out. In this case, the personal stuff won out. He was able to work out the personal things and look what he's done as a pitcher.... He's a unique kid. People will say that some kid reminds them of Zack Greinke someday.... I see the athleticism of a Bret Saberhagen and the way he can back up that fastball to left-handed hitters reminds me of Greg Maddux. He has the best characteristics of a lot of great pitchers all rolled into one.... The thing that's really amazing about him is the touch he has for the baseball, the feel he has for the baseball. He can sense things a couple of hitters away. He loves competition.... I just want nothing but the best for him every day, except when he pitches against us, of course.
