French Open 2011: Women's Draw Pits Kim Clijsters Against Maria Sharapova

Stay connected with SB Nation

The women's draw is set for the French Open 2011 and, like the men's field, seems to hold little to no chance of a U.S. victory with both Venus and Serena Williams scratched due to injury. American sweetheart Melanie Oudin, on a cold streak since her storied run to the quarterfinals in the 2009 U.S. Open, is as luckless as compatriot John Isner in this draw, facing 2010 Roland Garros champ Francesca Schiavone in Round 1 and further scuttling chances of an American taking a victory lap two Sundays from now.

On to players actually in contention: No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki draws Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan in Round 1, a player of whom we stand in perpetual awe thanks to her continuing to play professional tennis while being older than Michael Chang. Fan favorite Li Na, 2011 Australian Open runner-up, faces a relatively easy draw with No. 4 Victoria Azarenka the greatest threat. And in a truly unfortunate twist, the two likeliest women to hoist the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen have landed in the same quarter: There will be no Kim Clijsters-Maria Sharapova final in Paris.

French Open 2011 play begins in Paris on Sunday, May 22.
