Gael Monfils Upset Juan Carlos Ferrero By In Five Sets At 2011 US Open

Gael Monfils is out of the 2011 US Open after being knocked off by Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second-round. Monfils was the seventh-seed, but struggled throughout, dropping the first, fourth and fifth sets in a lengthy battle he ended up losing.

After Ferrero took the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), Monfils bounced back, sweeping the next two sets, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-5), to momentarily seize control of the match. It didn't last long, however, as Ferrero finished strong en route to the upset win.

Where the first three sets were back-and-forth, grueling battles, the fourth and fifth were all Ferrero, as he finished each with a 6-4 set win to take home victory. With the loss, Monfils is two-and-done at the US Open, while Ferrero moves forward and lives to fight another day.
