No. 5 seed David Ferrer struggled at times in his second round match at the 2012 Australian Open, but he was able to survive in a five-set win over Ryan Sweeting, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. In a match that stretch over three hours, and included a one-hour first set, Ferrer took some time to find his groove, dropping the first and third sets before finishing strong with solid fourth- and fifth-set wins.
Sweeting broke the ice with a win in the first set, pushing Ferrer to 6-6 before finishing the set by taking the tiebreaker, 7-4. Ferrer bounced back in the second as the two traded set wins over the first half of the match before Sweeting failed in the end.
With the win, Ferrer advances to the third round, where he'll face Juan Ignacio Chelo, the 27th-seed in the tournament. Chelo won his second round match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
