In Day 6 competition at the 2012 Australian Open, No. 2 women's tennis player Maria Sharapova had another strong showing to advance to the fourth round.
Sharapova defeated the No. 30-ranked German player Angeligue Kerber in straight sets of 6-1, 6-2. Kerber looked overmatched by the dominant Russian in both sets, perhaps to a greater extent than the final score would indicate. Sharapova had one ace in the match, while Kerber had none.
The two players were fairly close in other statistics. There were 24 unforced errors for Kerber as opposed to 22 for Sharapova. Kerber also had three double faults against just one by Sharapova. But apart from one impressive game in the second set, Kerber appeared genuinely overwhelmed by the attack of the No. 2 women's player in the world.
