Marion Bartoli has an impressive list of wins over top players under her belt, but she has once again come up short of where she was expected to finish in a major championship. She's been taken out in a third round upset by Chinese veteran Jie Zheng, who defeated Bartoli 6-3, 6-3 in under 90 minutes on Day 6 of the 2012 Australian Open.
Bartoli wasn't upset because of errors, but more because of a performance that lacked anything assertive. She actually had a better first serve percentage and less unforced errors than Zheng, but somehow hit only seven winners over the course of the match. Zheng converted on all four of her break point opportunities, and that was ultimately the difference. Bartoli can hardly say that she went down swinging. Zheng moves on to face Sara Errani in the fourth round.
