Unranked American Ryan Sweeting pushed No. 5 David Ferrer to five sets in the second round, but things went considerably more smoothly for the Spaniard in the third round of the 2012 Australian Open. Ferrer is into the fourth round after defeating Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela on Day 6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.

Chelis put up a serious fight in the first set, but when he gave up a late break to concede that set 7-5, he seemed to fall apart a bit. Ferrer won eight out of 13 break point chances in a match that featured 11 total breaks of serve. His serve was not particularly dominant, as usual, but his return neutralized Chela as the Argentinian won just 53 percent of his first serve points and an abysmal 26 percent of his second serve points. Ferrer also hit 43 winners to Chela's 18.
