Berlocq's finals round appearance is the first in his ATP career. Before the start of the final match, he had only dropped a single set in the tournament.

Monaco had only one match under his name for the 2012 season coming into the VTR Open. He had an early exit in the year's opening Grand Slam to Philipp Kohlschreiber in a five-set first-round loss. He is now 4-1.

"I'm very happy to be champion again," Monaco said. "I lost the last seven finals, so this is a very special moment for me."
