Victoria Azarenka might have a perfect record, but her statistics on Friday were anything but perfect.
The No. 1 WTA player in the world had zero aces, 12 double faults and gave up a 5-1 lead in the second set during her first match at BNP Parbias Open.
The Belarian tennis player held on with her serve and outlasted Germany's Mona Barthel, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6). It was the German's first time playing at Indian Wells. The match lasted three hours. With the victory, Azarenka moved to 18-0 on the season, including an Australian open title.
No. 3 seeded Petra Kvitova sailed through her match against her Czech opponent dropping only four games.
The upset of the day on the women's side came from wildcard Jamie Hampton who knocked No. 12 seeded Jelena Jankovic (and former world No. 1 ) from the Southern Cailfornia tournament. Hampton won 6-4, 6-3.
From the men's bracket, 19-year-old Aussie Bernard Tomic was defeated in three sets by Gilles Muller, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Muller hit 23 aces and won 88 percent of his service points.
Notable winners include: Marcos Baghdatis, Tommy Haas, David Nalbandian, Xavier Malisse, Ryan Sweeting and Nikolay Davydenko.
