On Monday at the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open, tennis fans were treated to a marquee matchup in the third round of the tournament when Roger Federer took on Andy Roddick. Three sets later, Roddick stunned everyone -- not least of which his opponent -- when he defeated the No. 3-ranked men's tennis player in the world, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4.
Roddick, while still a name player with talent and cachet, has been on the slide in the past couple of years, currently ranked No. 34 and having developed a bit of a reputation as a player who is unable to close. His defeat of Federer was only the third time he's defeated the all-time great in their 24 meetings. The win is a big statement that Roddick isn't finished yet and a huge momentum boost heading into the final rounds of the tournament.
