BNP Paribas Open 2012 Day 1 Results: American Jamie Hampton Wins First Round Match

While world No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki battled the winds in practice, American Jamie Hampton hit through them to overtake her opponent at the BNP Parbias Open.

Hampton -- now ranked No. 99, the first top-100 ranking of her career -- defeated Slovakian Polona Hercog, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round at Indian Wells.

So who is Hampton? A little background on the American: Hampton was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but resides in Alabama. She 22 years old, she's right-handed and she turned pro in September 2009. Last year at Indian Wells, the young American made it through qualifying but lost in the opening round to fellow American Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

Hampton will face the tournament's No. 12 seed, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, in the next round.

Fellow Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Jill Craybas won't move on. Vandeweghe lost in a three-set match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Austria's Jarmila Gajdosova. Craybas lost to Germany's Mona Barthel, 6-2, 6-1.

None of the seeds play on the opening day of the tournament in Southern California, as they all received byes. Action continues Thursday with the top WTA seeds playing. The ATP portion of the tournament will also begin Thursday.
