Wild card Venus Williams is 6-1 in her return to tennis, and her most recent victory was an upset at the Family Circle Cup.
Williams faced No. 7 seed Jelena Jankovic in the second round in Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday. The match between the two former world No. 1s lasted almost an hour and a half.
Williams came back from 3-1 down in the first set and eventually broke Jankovic's serve seven times before going onto a straight-sets victory. Williams won 7-5, 6-0.
She will face Anastasia Rodionova in the third round. If Williams wins that match and the next one, she will be in the tournament's semifinals, where she could face her little sister Serena.
The younger Williams sister, who is the tournament's No. 5 seed, did not have a match scheduled Wednesday.
No. 3 seed Marion Bartoli did have a match, and she almost didn't walk away as the victor.
Bartoli faced Vera Dushevina of Russia in a three-set blunder that lasted just over three hours. Bartoli survived a match that featured 11 service breaks and won 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
No. 2 seed Sam Stosur and Serena Williams will return to action on Thursday.
