Second round play at the 2012 Italian Open concludes Wednesday on Day 4 of the tournament. No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and No. 3 seed Roger Federer both won to advance to the Round of 16. Serena Williams also advanced on the women's side of the bracket with a three-set victory.

Nadal beat Florian Meyer of Germany, 6-1, 7-5, to move on. The Spaniard won two breaks and went 11-for-11 on first serve points for an easy win in the first set. The second set was a bit more difficult, though Nadal still scored on 88 percent of his eligible first serves and notched a break on Mayer's final serve of the set before holding for match point. Nadal will face Marcel Granollers in the third round.

Federer also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Argentina's own Carlos Berlocq. Federer won his only break opportunity in the first set, and won two breaks to Berlocq's one in the second set to advance. He is set to take on Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round, an upset winner over No. 13 Gael Monfils on Tuesday.

Williams needed three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, to eventually take out Nadia Petrova of Russia. Williams was taken to break point nine times in the first two sets, but fought back to save seven of them. She regained her poise in the third to hold all of her serves and force Petrova to defend four break chances. Williams will face Anabel Medina Garrigues in the third round, a 6-4, 4-0, upset winner over No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday.

It was an upset-filled day on both sides of the bracket. No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 7 Marion Bartoli both fell to unseeded challengers in addition to Wozniacki. On the men's side, No. 9 John Isner left the tournament early losing 6-2, 6-7 (5), 5-7, to Andreas Seppi of Italy. Isner put up a better fight than No.. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, who lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to Stanislas Wawrinka.
