On Wednesday, No. 2 ranked women's player Maria Sharapova continued her strong run in the 2012 French Open. In her quarterfinal match against No. 23 Kaia Kanepi, Sharapova was dominant, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Although Kanepi had five aces in the match and Sharapova didn't have any, Sharapova's more rounded game allowed her to control just about every other facet of the contest.
Sharapova now advances to the semifinals, where she will take on the winner of Wednesday's match between Yaroslava Shvedova and No. 4 Petra Kvitova.
Now that No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has been eliminated, this may be Sharapova's Grand Slam event to win. Sharapova is certainly playing like she's well aware of that fact.
