Western & Southern Open 2012 Results: Andy Roddick Injures Back, Upset In 1st Round

Day two of the 2012 Western & Southern Open gave fans in Cincinnati, Ohio a monumental upset in the men's draw on Tuesday, as the tournament's 16th-ranked player, Andy Roddick, was defeated in straight sets by France's Jeremy Chardy, 6-7, 4-7, (3-6).

Playing in his first ATP event since picking up a much-needed victory on July 22, Roddick battled a worsening back injury en route to losing to the 25-year-old Frenchman, a player who has never once advanced past the fourth round in any Grand Slam tournament. Clearly upset about the loss and that his health for the U.S. Open is now in question, the former world No. 1 still doesn't have a clear idea what his timetable might look like.

"We will know more in two, three days than we do now,” Roddick told reporters after his early exit Tuesday. “So it’s tough for me to say what side of the fence I’m sitting on. I don’t know where I’m going to be in two or three days.”

Over in the women's draw, unranked contender Venus Williams did her best to shake up the field with an impressive three-set ousting of 12th-seeded player Maria Kirilenko, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. Venus' first-round victory will pit her against Chanelle Scheepers in round two, while her sister Serena, the No. 2 women's seed, also stayed alive by rolling over Eleni Daniilidou in her second round match (6-3, 6-4).
