Australia's Samantha Stosur defeated Croatia's Petra Martic, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of the U.S. Open as the Aussie began her defense of her 2011 Open championship.
The match was the first one completed of the tournament and it went quickly. Stosur, the seventh-seed, had little trouble dispatching of Martic in what was only a 51-minute match. Other matches have been suspended due to a rain delay including American James Blake's match, in which he is up two sets on Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.
Stosur was dominant with 10 aces and had 22 winners to Martic's seven. Martic also committed 25 unforced errors to Stosur's 11.
Stosur's best finish in a major tournament this season was making the semifinals at Roland Garros.
Stosur will face the winner of Edina Gallovits-Hall and Stefanie Voegele in the second round.
