2012 U.S. Open Scores: Andy Roddick Wallops Bernard Tomic In Three Sets

Andy Roddick's final tour will continue for one more day after Roddick handled Australian Bernard Tomic in three sets on Friday, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0.

The win comes a day after the 30-year-old Roddick held a news conference and surprisingly announced that the 2012 U.S. Open will be the last tournament of his career.

Roddick served up 13 aces against Tomic and completely overwhelmed him in the final set, where Tomic only won a total of five points. Roddick's serve was its usual self, topping out at 139 m.p.h.

He will go on to play 59th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy. Fognini beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in three sets, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2.

2012 U.S. Open Tennis Results: Venus Williams Knocked Out of U.S. Open

Venus Williams lost her second-round match at the U.S. Open tonight, falling to No. 6 Angelique Kerber 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. Williams held a 4-2 lead in the third set, but was broken in the eleventh game and failed to force a tiebreak in the twelfth. It was Williams' second loss to Kerber in a month; the German also defeated Venus in the third round of the Olympics.

Williams struggled with her serve throughout the match, successfully playing only 54% of her first serves and recording a staggering 16 double faults. Williams recorded more winners -- 43 to Kerber's 20 -- but played 35 more unforced errors than her opponent. Williams was successful when she could get to the net, but Kerber's baseline effectively game kept her from advancing frequently.

The loss brings Venus' major championship season to a close, a difficult season for the superstar as she returned to action after missing much of 2011 with illness and injury. Venus and her sister Serena will be in action tomorrow in women's doubles.

On the men's side, Roger Federer dominated Bjorn Phau in three straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2 to advance to the third round. The top-seeded Federer overwhelmed Phau with 15 aces and 44 winners to Phau's total of 16. Federer won nearly 80% of his first serve points and only double-faulted once.

The one hour and a half clinic advanced Federer to the third round for a matchup against Fernando Verdasco. Federer holds a 4-0 record against Verdasco, last beating him in 2009 at the quarterfinals of the ATP World Finals.

Andy Roddick Will Retire After 2012 U.S. Open

Andy Roddick entered the week ranked No. 22 in the world and the 20th-seeded player at the 2012 U.S. Open, hoping to recapture his former form and once again play deep into the draw in Flushing Meadows. On Thursday, Roddick revealed that this will be his last chance for Grand Slam glory, as the American announced that he will retiring at the conclusion of the tournament.

Roddick made the announcement on his 30th birthday.

Earlier this summer, Roddick was knocked out of Wimbledon in the third round, and bore little resemblance to the former world No. 1 of years past.

"I have decided that this is going to be my last tournament," Roddick said in a news conference on Thursday. "Walking off at Wimbledon, I felt like I knew. I couldn't imagine myself being there another year."

Roddick is still in the mix for the 2012 U.S. Open crown after winning his opening-round match against fellow American Rhyne Williams. He will face Bernard Tomic of Australia in second-round action at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night.

If Roddick can't take home the trophy in his final tournament, he will retire with one Grand Slam title. He won the 2003 U.S. Open at the age of 21 and lost in four other Grand Slam finals over his career, falling to Roger Federer at the 2006 U.S. Open and three times at Wimbledon (2004, 2005, 2009).
