The fifth day of the 2012 U.S. Open is in the books and Day 5 proved to be another strong one for the top seeds.
On the women's side of the draw, No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against No. 28 seed Jie Zheng. No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova was also dominant, dropping just games points during her 6-1, 6-1 win against Mallory Burdette. No. 5 Petra Kvitova and No. 7 seed Samantha Stosur also advanced to the fourth round. No. 9 seed Na Li was the only top 10 seed to lose.
Five top 10 seeds were in action on the men's side and all five advanced. No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic knocked off Rogerio Dutra da Silva 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 while No. 4 seed David Ferrer also advanced in three sets. Other top 10 seeds advancing Friday included No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro, No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic and No. 9 seed John Isner.
No. 20 seed Andy Roddick, playing in the final tournament of his career, lived to play another day with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 victory against Bernard Tomic. On Thursday, Roddick announced he would retire following the 2012 U.S. Open. He played well on Friday and will now face Fabio Fognini in the third round.
