U.S. Open 2012: Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova Will Finish Matches Wednesday

Heavy rains suspended many of Tuesday's U.S. Open matches and flat-out canceled the evening's scheduled matches.

Andy Roddick's farewell tour was shaping up to be a battle in a very even match with seventh-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro before heavy rains suspended their first set, which was sitting even at 6-6. Roddick had won a total of 36 points to Del Potro‘s 35 before the match was called.

Second-seeded Novak Djokovic was up 2-0 on the first set against 18th-seeded Stanislas Warinka before play was suspended. The men had only been playing tennis for 10 minutes.

Janko Tipsarevic was up on 19th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 5-2 before suspension. Kohlschreiber was struggling against the eighth-seeded Tipsarevic, committing 18 unenforced errors before play was suspended. Two doubles matches, including one involving Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, were cancelled before play began.

Maria Sharapova will use the rain delay as a much-needed reprieve from Marion Bartoli. The third-seeded Sharapova was trailing Bartoli 4-0 in the first set before the rain interrupted her match in Tuesday's day session. If Sharapova loses, she will be the second women's top-four seed or higher to be knocked out.

U.S. Open 2012 Tennis Scores: Andy Roddick's Match Postponed Due To Rain

Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro's fourth-round match at the 2012 U.S. Open has been temporarily suspended on Tuesday night due to rain. The skies opened up in the midst of a first-set tiebreak, with the 20th-seeded Roddick holding a 1-to-0 lead over the seventh-seeded del Potro. The set moved into a tiebreak after each player won six games.

The current forecast calls for periods of rain over the next one to two hours as a decision is made whether to resume play, according to the U.S. Open's Twitter handle.

Update: Play has been suspended for the night and will resume Wednesday.

Also on the men's side, Novak Djokovic's match with Stanislas Wawrinka was stopped with the second-ranked Djokovic up two games to none in the first set. Eighth-ranked Janko Tipsarevic is involved in the one other men's match stopped on Tuesday night. Tipsarevic is up five games to two over Philipp Kohlschreiber.

On the women's side, third-seeded Maria Sharapova had her match stopped with her down four games to none to 11th-ranked Marion Bartoli during the day session. That match has officially been suspended until tomorrow. If Sharapova is upset, she'd be the second top-four seed knocked out on the women's side.

2012 U.S. Open Scores: Andy Murray Breezes Into Quarterfinals

Andy Murray moved into the quarterfinals of the 2012 U.S. Open with a straight-set victory over Canadian Milos Raonic at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night. The match was moved up to 7 p.m. ET to avoid inclement weather predicted in the New York City area.

Murray, the men's No. 3, was dominant on his serve as he did not face a break point in the entire match. He moves on to face 12th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic advanced with a victory over Martin Klizan.

The result from Murray on Monday keeps open the possibility of a rematch of the Wimbledon final with Roger Federer in the semifinals. Federer advanced in a walkover after Mardy Fish withdrew from the tournament on Monday.
