Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych defeated Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, Thursday afternoon to advance to the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open. Berdych continued his run of straight-set victories, as he has yet to drop a set at Indian Wells this week.
Berdych knocked off Mischa Zverev, Florian Meyer and Richard Gasquet prior to his win over Anderson. The 27-year-old Czech is cruising at this point, but he'll face his toughest test in the next round, as he is set to take on the winner of Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal.
Anderson kept the competition close, holding serve throughout the entire first set. The South African double-faulted in the 10th game, though, handing Berdych an early lead and ultimately foreshadowing his loss. Berdych broke Anderson in the 10th game of the second set, as well.
On the women's side, injuries plagued both semifinal matches, each resulting in a walkover. No. 8 seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated No. 1 Victoria Azarenka after the top seed withdrew from play with a right ankle injury. Seventh-seeded Samantha Stosur pulled out of her match with No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber with a right calf injury.
Federer and Nadal headline the evening action at Indian Wells.
