Top-seeded Serena Williams is through to the third round after taking out Flavia Pennetta in straight-sets on Wednesday at the 2013 Sony Open in Miami, Fla. Williams needed just 77 minutes to beat Pennetta, giving up just two games while winning 84 percent of her first serve points. Serena pounced on her opponents' second serve, allowing Pennetta to win just 29 percent of those points.
Williams advances to face Japan's Ayumi Morita, who defeated No. 31 Yanina Wickmayer in three sets.
Australian Open darling Sloane Stephens recovered from a disastrous first set to take down Olga Govortsova. Stephens failed to win a game in the first, but came back to win the second and third sets, both at 6-4. Stephens will see Venus Williams in the third round.
Three other top-10 women's seeds won on Wednesday. No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanksa and No. 5 Na Li both advanced without dropping a set. No. 7 Petra Kvitova had to climb out of a one-set hole to defeat China's Shuai Peng.
The big names on the men's side weren't on the court as first-round action took place. The top seeds were awarded byes into the second round. A complete list of scores can be found at the tournament's official site.
