The first half of the ATP Quarterfinals and the second half of the WTA Quarterfinals are winding down as the last of the Wednesday match-ups are played. It was an exciting day of tennis at the 2013 Sony Open and there's plenty to discuss.
In the earlier match, No. 3 David Ferrer took down unseeded Jurgen Melzer, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Ferrer broke Melzer in three of five break point opportunities in the third set and generally dominated the final two sets. Ferrer wrapped up that match-up in one hour and 55 minutes.
No. 15 Tommy Haas continued his incredible run on in the late matchup on Thursday. He took down No. 11 Gilles Simon with little issue, winning 6-3, 6-1.
On the WTA side, No. 3 Maria Sharapova took out No. 8 Sara Errani, 7-5, 7-5. It was an ugly contest altogether, with the crowd noticeably groaning at one point due to the multiple mistakes. In the later matchup, No. 22 Jelena Jankovic took down No. 15 Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 6(6)-7, 6-3.
Thursday will see the other half of the ATP quarterfinals, as No. 8 Richard Gasquet takes on No. 4 Tomas Berdych and No. 2 Andy Murray faces No. 9 Marin Cilic. On the WTA side, the semifinals get underway as No. 1 Serena Williams faces No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska and Sharapova takes on Jankovic.
