Ernests Gulbis won the 2013 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Sunday, defeating Edouard Roger-Vasellin in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3. It was an unlikely match-up in the final, as both Gulbis and Roger-Vasellin were ranked outside the top 100, with the 109th-ranked Latvian prevailing over the 105th-ranked Frenchman. Two players ranked outside the top 100 have not met in a finals match since 2007 in Houston.
Gulbis, who also won the event in 2010, is the first qualifier to win a title since Jarkko Nieminen won an event in Sydney in January, 2012. He defeated Tommy Haas, the tournament's second overall seed, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2) in the semifinals, and also defeated the third seed, Sam Querrey, in the second round, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4) . The finals appearance for Roger-Vasellin was the first in his career, and this tournament was the first time he has advanced past the quarterfinal stage at an ATP event.
