The second round of the women's draw at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open began Friday and No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova was among the players able to advance.
Day 3 of the 2013 BNP Paribas Open wrapped up on Friday and the majority of the favorites were able to advance without issue.
On the women's side, No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova had little trouble in her second round matchup, advancing past Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-1. Sharapova will move on to face No. 25 Carla Suarez Navarro in the third round. No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced with similar ease, defeating Maria Sanchez 6-2, 6-1.
The three other top-10 seeds in action Friday were also able to advance although No. 5 Petra Kvitova and No. 6 Sara Errani had more of a challenge than Sharapova and Radwanska. Kvitova needed three sets to get past Olga Govortsova, but was able to come away with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Errani also needed three sets, knocking off Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. No. 9 Marion Bartoli defeated Chanelle Scheepers 6-3, 6-3.
American Christina McHale won the first set against No. 13 seed Maria Kirilenko 6-4, but went on lose the final two sets and the match 4-6, 1-6.
On the men's side, the first round wrapped up on Friday. Fabio Fognini advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Aljaz Bedene. American James Blake was also a winner as he knocked off Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4. Blake, who was a wild-card qualifier, will face No. 8 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.
