French Open results 2013: Roger Federer, Serena Williams advance with ease

USA TODAY Sports

Federer and the younger Williams sister both dispatched their opponents in straight sets on Wednesday to advance to Round 3 at the 2013 French Open.

The start of second round play Wednesday at the 2013 French Open saw tournament favorites dominate once again. The top-seeded players on the men's and women's draws on the day -- No. 2 Roger Federer and No. 1 Serena Williams, respectively -- both made quick work of overmatched opponents.

Federer took out Somdev Devvarman of India in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Devvarman only saw three break-point chances in the match, and failed to capitalize on any of them. On the other side of the court, Federer saw 14 break-point chances and converted seven. Federer advances to the third round, where he will face France's Julien Benneteau, a five-set winner over Tobias Kamke.

Williams' performance against 19-year-old Caroline Garcia of France was equally dominant. Williams was simply too strong, scoring on 82 percent of her serves for a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Garcia, could only convert on 47 percent of her serve attempts, and managed just two aces to six for Williams. Williams advances to face No. 26 Sorana Cirstea of Romania on Friday.
