Those looking for drama at the 2013 U.S. Open found it on Monday evening when No. 7 Roger Federer was upset by Spain's Tommy Robredo, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-4.
The fourth-round win puts No. 19 Robredo into the quarterfinals where he awaits either Rafael Nadal or Philipp Kohlschreiber. That match is just underway in New York.
Federer, a 17-time major champion, had been 10-0 lifetime against Robredo coming into Monday's match. With the loss, he has now failed to reach the quarterfinals at a major for the first time in his last 37 tries. It is also his earliest exit at the U.S. Open since 2003.
Robredo, meanwhile, reached the fourth round by taking down Marinko Matosevic, Frank Dancevic and Daniel Evans along the way. Federer had defeated Grega Zemlja, Carlos Berlocq and Adrian Mannarino.
The loss is just another in what has been a disappointing season for Federer. He came up short at each of the other major tournaments and has just one singles title in 2013.
