French Open results 2014: Serena and Venus Williams dominate along with other favorites

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Sunday was not a day for upsets at the French Open.

The first day of the French Open was just a formality, as it turns out. Between the men's and women's bracket, there was only a single upset. The favorites didn't just win their matches on Sunday, they dominated in both brackets.

Top-seeded Serena Williams, who won the French Open a year ago, overwhelmed Alize Lim in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Venus Williams, the No. 29 seed, beat Belinda Bencic, who, at 17 years old, is just about half of Williams' age. If the Williams sisters keep winning, they could face one another down the line in this tournament.

On the men's side, fourth-seeded Roger Federer was the top seed in action on Sunday. He had an easy win over Lukas Lacko in three sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. In other action, No. 15 Mikhail Youzhny needed a bit of a comeback to beat Pablo Carreno Busta on Sunday. Youzhny dropped the first two sets but eventually won the match, 3-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.

While the first slate of matches may have been somewhat uneventful, it should set the stage for some interesting matchups on the second day of the tournament. Both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be taking the court Monday and should have the full attention of the tennis world.

Here are the full results from the first day of action.
