Wimbledon 2014 scores and results: Rafa, Roger and Maria take center stage

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The first Saturday of Wimbledon saw three former champions advance to the fourth round and one No. 1 seed fail to get past the third.

Saturday started off tough for two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal on Center Court. For the third consecutive round he dropped the first set, this time losing 7-4 in a tiebreak to Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin. But, for the third consecutive round, Rafa came back to win, rolling Kukushkin 6-1 in each of the final three sets. Rafa largely outplayed Kukushkin in the first set, even if he was unable to stop his serve, but stumbled in the tiebreak. He seems to have to finally returned to title form after spending the last two years watching the second week of the Fortnight from his couch.

He'll be joined in the second week by perhaps his greatest rival, Roger Federer, who made quick work of Colombian Santiago Giraldo in the day's final singles match at Center Court. The weather was on Federer's side, forcing officials to close the roof due to the rain which cancelled at least 30 other matches. The climate -- or lack thereof -- created by the roof closing has worked out well for Roger in the past, and rather notoriously in the 2012 Gentlemen's Final against Andy Murray.

The last time that Maria Sharapova was seeded first in the Ladies' bracket at Wimbledon was 2012. However, with this year's top seed Serena Williams losing to 24-year-old Alize Cornet of France, and second seed Li Na bowing out on Friday, the race towards the Wimbledon final has become a free-for-all.

Because of the rain, multiple matches were suspended or canceled for the second consecutive day, including those featuring American John Isner and Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka. You can find full results for Day 6 here, or you can check them below:
