Roger Federer was the top seed to take the court on a rainy Sunday at Roland Garros, but his fourth-round match against No. 13 Gael Monfils was suspended until Monday due to darkness. Although the second-seeded Federer took the first set, 6-3, France's Monfils came back to win the second set, 6-4, to the home crowd's delight.
The winner of the Federer-Monfils match on Monday will face No. 8 Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. Wawrinka cruised past No. 12 Gilles Simon on Sunday for a straight-set win.
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the quarterfinals to the approval of a partisan audience. No. 14 Tsonga upset fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych in four sets and celebrated with his signature post-victory dance.
For the first time in his career, Kei Nishikori is headed to the quarterfinal round of the French Open. The fifth-seeded Nishikori dominated unseeded Teymuraz Gabashvili to became just the second Japanese men's player to reach the quarterfinals and the first since Jiro Satoh in 1933. Nishikori and Tsonga will meet in the next round.
On the women's side, Ana Ivanovic is back in the French Open quarterfinals after beating Ekaterina Makarova in a rain-delayed match. Seventh-seeded Ivanovic, who won the French Open in 2008, dropped her second set to the ninth-seeded Makarova, but she came back strong in the third set for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
In the quarterfinals, Ivanovic will face No. 19 Elina Svitolina, who topped Frenchwoman Alize Cornet Sunday. Their match was interrupted by rain during the first set and despite a battle in the second set, Svitolina prevailed over the home favorite. This is the first career Grand Slam quarterfinal for the Ukrainian.
The other two women's matches -- No. 2 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 13 Lucie Safarova, and No. 21 Garbine Muguruza vs. No. 28 Flavia Pennetta -- were postponed due to a rain delay that lasted nearly three hours. They are now scheduled for Monday, when Sharapova will try to reach the French Open quarterfinals for the fifth straight year.
