Serena Williams has advanced to the second round at the US Open, dominating her opening round opponent on Tuesday. Williams drew the tough Ekaterina Makarova in the first round, but she looked like her usual self, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Serena's sister, Venus Williams, was also in action on Tuesday but she had her share of struggles. Venus looked in complete control in the first set, taking it by a score of 6-2, but her opponent, Kateryna Kozlova, battled back to take the second set and force a third. Fortunately for Venus, she powered through and advanced to the second round following the 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
On the men's side, Stan Wawrinka was the second-highest seed in action. Wawrinka, the third seed, drew a very tough opener against Fernando Verdasco, a former top 10-ranked player. Wawrinka fought off a first-set tiebreak and then held steady to win the second and third sets to advance, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4.
Agnieszka Radwanska, one of three women who could feasibly unseat Serena as the top-ranked woman in tennis, looked great in her victory over American Jessica Pegula on Tuesday. After Radwanska, there was Simona Halep, the fifth seed, who dominated Kirsten Flipkens to move on to the second round as well.
Juan Martin Del Potro, the most notable unseeded player in the tournament, advanced to the second round after beating compatriot Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Tuesday, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(3). Del Potro was the US Open winner in 2009, though he faded into relative obscurity after that. But Del Potro charged back during the recent Rio Olympics, where he took the silver medal while eliminating both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Other top seeds who found victory on Tuesday include Kei Nishikori, David Ferrer, Grigor Dimitrov, Carla Suarez Navarro and Timea Bacsinszky.
Upsets
While the top seeds remained intact, there were some significant upsets on the first round's final day. The biggest saw David Goffin, the No. 12 seed for the men, fall to Jared Donaldson in four sets. Donaldson dropped the opening set, but controlled Goffin from then on, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0.
Bernard Tomic, a talented player who has drawn criticism for his actions outside of his actual play on the court, was the No. 17 seed for the tournament, but he was dropped in his opener by Damir Dzumhur. Dzumhur dropped the third set, but he ultimately bested Tomic on the back of a fourth-set tiebreak, winning, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(0).
Philipp Kohlschreiber, the 25th seed, and American Sam Querrey, the 29th seed, also fell in the opening round. Nicolas Mahut and Janko Tipsarevic bested those two, respectively. On the women's side, no top seeds fell but No. 20 Kiki Bertens, No. 23 Daria Kasatkina and No. 29 Ana Ivanovic were among those eliminated from contention in the first round.
