Zenit made numerous mistakes during an otherwise decent performance, helping Milan to a victory.
AC Milan were poor again on Wednesday, but managed to find three goals against a Zenit St. Petersburg side that made a couple of terrible mistakes, cancelling out their mostly impressive play. They equalized after letting Milan go ahead 2-0, but gifted the Rossoneri another goal in their 3-2 victory.
Urby Emmanuelson scored the game's first goal on a free kick that took a wicked deflection off the top of the wall. Three minutes later, Stephan El Shaarawy doubled his side's lead by skinning two defenders as he cut in from the left side, then placing a great shot past Vyacheslav Malafeev. Christian Abbiati did his best to keep Milan's clean sheet with some great saves in the first half, but Zenit were able to pull a goal back just before halftime through Hulk.
Zenit were the much better side for the final 20 minutes of the first half and they carried that over into the second half. On a beautiful corner by Hulk, Roman Shirokov headed past Abbiati to give Zenit a deserved equalizer. They pushed forward for a winner, but the rest of the second half was mostly even.
Giampaolo Pazzini came on for Bojan shortly after the goal, and he would have a part in the winner. On a cross into the box towards Pazzini, who got himself into the perfect position to finish, Tomas Hubocan got in front of him to cut off the cross. However, he wasn't able to do so with any skill, and simply managed to get himself between Pazzini and the ball. He directed the ball into his own net, gifting Milan the wnner.
