The strongside defensive end prospect made his pledge to the Huskies at the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- 2013 Upland (CA) Joe Mathis committed to the Washington Huskies in an announcement made at the start of the 2nd quarter in the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl.

Mathis chose the Huskies over finalists USC, UCLA, and Alabama. Of those schools, only Washington had received an official visit from the 6-4, 255-pounder who could be a swing guy in college, as well as the final visit, as Mathis visited Seattle in early December and did not take any visits after that. The Bruins had received three unofficial visits this fall, however.

The decision came down for the Huskies, Mathis said, because of the family atmosphere, mentioning super-recruiter Tosh Lupoi specifically.

A consensus four-star prospect with a national offer list that included Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and many others, Mathis is the 22nd commit in the strong Washington class, as well as the sixth defensive lineman. Despite all those lineman committed, Mathis fills a significant need because the other two defensive ends in the class are weakside prospects.
