Joel Anthony.... Playoff MVP?

This is an excerpt from an ESPN insider article in which David Thorpe lists him MVP's for the playoffs. Guess who comes in at #10? Thats right, Joel Anthony.

"He has the worst hands I've ever seen from an NBA post player on offense. But there's no getting around his impact in the Heat's series against the Pacers. It wasn't his shot-blocking that made such a difference but his activity on defense overall. Showing on ball screens, helping on dribble penetration with his long arms, making plays above the rim and adding just enough catch-and-finish baskets in the paint off feeds from Wade and LeBron to make Indiana pay for leaving him open as often as it did.

Anthony is nowhere close to the player Chris Bosh is, but Indiana now knows it needed to account for him more than it did."

Steve Nash
I know most people don't have ESPN insider, so i'm going to share an excerpt from an article on where Nash should land.

"Best fit:

Miami Heat: Imagine the possibilities: Nash to Chris Bosh in the pick-and-pop. Nash to Dwyane Wade, or LeBron James, on the break. Nash as an off-the-ball option to spread the floor when Wade and James go to work in isolation. Nash breaking down the defense on close-outs and feeding a world-class athlete coming along the baseline from one corner or the other.

Nash could make a healthy Miami roster nearly unstoppable on offense, even given the lack of a knock-down 3-point shooter. This is his best chance to chase a ring and catch it."

TE Kellen Winslow is available. Anybody else interested in bringing the Miami star back home? I know we have Egnew as a receiving TE, but having him watch Winslow for a year doesnt sound too bad to me...

The Phinsider Overflow- Wednesday Daytime Random Live Thread:Manning Watch Day Six/ Free Agency Rumor Edition

Just gonna copy what Tex wrote here this morning:

I am going to continue this version of the live thread until something breaks. Where will he wind up? Also this is day two of free agency. Continue to check the front page throughout the day for breaking news.

REGULAR DAILY STATEMENT-This is one of our daytime random live threads. I will post one each non holiday Monday through Friday. Feel free to stop in during your work day and chat about whatever. There are never any set subject's but as always we prefer that you stay as far away from politics and religion. Also as this is a day time thread and not a nighttime CKC please keep the conversation as close to a PG as possible.

Also I do not care if you post picks during these threads but try and keep them to a minimum of one or two per person with something in the subject line so that they may be closed. In the past we have had issues with the same person posting several and that only serves to slow down the whole thread for everyone. Also please refrain from placing GIF's in to live threads as they severely slow down the load time of the thread.

Philbin to convert to 4-3?

i read on walterfootball.com that Philbin said he will convert to a 4-3 and i dont remember hearing or seeing that on this site. Is it true?

This is very interesting. It seems the Rams are considering cutting RT Jason Smith. Smith has played pretty well since being drafted, but certainly hasnt lived up to being the #2 pick. With the Rams likely to draft Kalil (if the keep the #2 pick) and move Staffold to RT, Smith could possibly be cut due to his massive contract. If cut, Smith could possibly be a decent option for us. He does have a bit of an injury history and he isnt an elite RT, but he is above average (and young) and would prevent us from using another 1st round pick on the O-Line. I personally think John Jerry is the answer at RT for us, just thought I'd suggest another option...

The Phinsider My Perfect Offseason

The following is what I would do this offseason if given control of the Franchise...

1. Needs (in no particular order)- QB, RT, WR, FS, DE (4-3), TE, DT, LB

2. I want to let everyone know that I think we should move to a 4-3 defense so please judge all moves from that perspective. I know we have been a very good defense running the 3-4, but in order to be a great 3-4 team, you need that impact NT. Soliai, is not that guy. In 5 years he has totaled 97 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 2 sacks. I know NT isn’t a position that puts up big stats, but I’m sick of giving Soliai huge money for minimal impact. I would much rather reallocate that money to shore up other weaknesses. Another reason I would switch to the 4-3 is because I think a lot of out personnel would fit very well. For example, imagine how dominant Wake would be if we told him he never has to worry about covering another player again and just to concentrate on stopping the run and getting to the QB.

3. Draft

a. 1st round- Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor- How did we acquire RGIII you ask? Well, we gave up a lot to move up to #2. I traded this year’s 1st and 2nd pick along with next year’s 1st and 3rd pick. That is a lot to give up, but until a team has a Franchise QB, I believe QB is their biggest need. No more “we’ll wait till next year” or any stop-gap options. It is time to finally go all in for the heir to Marino and RGIII is that guy. Also, getting an up-in-coming coach and getting RGIII at QB will make Miami a place that players want to come to play (similar to the Heat in the NBA). Miami is and should be a destination city and RGIII will help us get to that status, this should help us in Free Agency

b. 3rd round- Due to the move to the 4-3 another pass rusher at DE across from Wake is a huge need. There are a ton of pass rushers projected to go in the 2nd round, a few of them will fall to the early 3rd, so we can get good value by going DE in the 3rd. Just to give you a few possible names: Brandon Lindsey, Shea McClellin, Frank Alexander, and Julian Miller. There are many more and someone will fall, so rather than guess which one, I am just going to say that we take whichever 4-3 DE falls.

c. 4th round- Marcus Forston, DT, The U. The move to the 4-3 also means we will have a need for depth at DT. Forston missed last season with a knee injury which has resulted in a decrease in his draft stock. If the knee checks out, he will be a steal at the beginning of the 4th round.

d. 5th round- Cameron Chism, CB, Maryland- We have a need in the secondary across from Davis. Jimmy Wilson in the slot is solid, but Sean Smith has to improve across from Davis. I like Chism as a prospect he has decent size and good speed. I think he has a lot of potential and could push Smith down the road.

4. Free Agency

a. WR- Pierre Garcon- most of us believe that whoever the new coach is will open up the offense a bit next year (especially if we get RGIII). That means 4-WR sets. Hartline is a decent player, but he doesn’t scare anybody. If we bring in a big- play guy like Garcon (or Meachem), that makes Hartline our #4 receiver. He would be one of the best 4th receivers in the league and will dominate #4 corners. So, I would like a WR with size and some speed across from BM. The good news is that there a ton of free agent WRs that fit that criteria this year. If Garcon passes on Miami I would consider: Robert Meachem, Mario Manningham, Laurent Robinson, Jerome Simpson, Early Doucet, Eddie Royal, and Ted Ginn Jr. (lol… just kidding about that last one)

b. TE- Kellen Davis- Davis is a good TE because he is both a good blocker and a receiver. He receiving numbers look terrible, but that is because the Bears have no idea how to use TEs (just look at how they wasted Olsen all those years). Davis is a great redzone target due to his size and he was starting to become more involved in the passing game before Cutler got injured. He will come very cheap and would provide RGIII with a good safety valve. Another option is Fred Davis who just put up a great year with the Redskins. I would rather get Fred Davis over Kellen, but we may not be able to afford him while leaving enough flexibility to make other moves. Best case senerio is we sign Fred Davis, but I am going to suggest Kellen Davis because it is more realistic. Other TE options include Marcedes Lewis, and John Carlson who should both come cheap after a down years/injuries.

c. G- Jake Scott- I’ve seen many people saying we should go after Carl Nicks and, honestly, idk why. Nicks will command the largest contract ever for a G this offseason, I cannot justify giving him that much money. Jake Scott would be a more fiscally responsible option than Nicks. Scott is a very good and underrated LG. Long, Scott, and Pouncey would give us one of, if not the best left side of the O-Line in the league. Another positive to this move is if frees Incognito up to provide depth. In case of injury, Incognito could fill in at all 3 interior positions and give us very solid play.

d. DE- Robert Mathis- Although I have us drafting a DE in the 3rd, we still need a starter. The most intriguing option here is Robert Mathis. I know he was pissed at the Colts because they gave Freeney an extension and didn’t give him one. That along with his age and the year the Colts just had could mean Mathis could be had pretty cheap. I know that he is already 30, but he is still an impact player that will draw attention away from Wake for a season or two. Mathis is an impact veteran that will buy us some time to develop a young player behind him. An alternative to Mathis is Jeremy Mincey, a 28 year old who just had a pretty good season with the Jags. I would like to say we should sign Cliff Avril, but he will cost way too much money and I am trying to be realistic.

e. Linebacker- Gary Guyton- Guyton is a guy people have been talking about on this site and, like a lot of you, I like him. He is very good in coverage and could play both inside and outside linebacker. We could have Misi in the game on running downs and bring in Guyton on passing downs. Guyton should come cheap as well.

f. FS- Michael Griffin- This is the guy who will cost the most. He is a very good safety who would allow us to shore up that huge hole next to Bell at FS. Griffin is good in coverage, makes a lot of tackles, and forces turnovers. Sounds perfect. He could be the player that moves our defense into that elite category. If Griffin costs too much or he doesn’t like Miami, other options include: Dashon Goldson, Charles Godfrey, and Thomas DeCoud. All 4 players would be an improvement at FS.

5. Other

a. Move Cameron Wake to DE

b. Move Randy Starks and Jared Odrick to DT

c. Move Kevin Burnett to ROLB- I think he has the size and athleticism to play outside.

d. Move John Jerry to RT- I really like what I saw out of Jerry at the end of last season when he filled in for Long and think he is the answer to our hole at RT.

e. Let Paul Soliai walk (or try to get something for him in a trade)

f. Try to get something for Langford in a trade. I love Langford and would hate to trade him, but he wouldn’t fit our new defense. He has value so trading him is better than letting him walk for nothing.

anybody else think he would be a solid pickup. He has had a few very solid seasons and I think he would be a great #2. Of course, getting somebody to throw to him would still be a problem...

Now people can stop suggesting we trade one of them. Also, he said Spo will be the coach next year and that he will remain in his GM position.

The Phinsider My Phins Draft

My Dream Phins Draft

Fixing the Offense

1st round

#15- Trade to the Eagles for their 1st, 3rd, and 4th (from Washington). This trade works according to the value chart, with us giving up 1,050 points and getting 1,013 points in return.

#23(from Eagles)- Ryan Mallett QB

This pick really is self explanatory. I have no faith that Henne is the QB that will make the Dolphins perennial Superbowl contenders, so I think QB is our biggest need. The biggest knock on Mallett is his “character concerns”. We have all seen the clip ESPN keeps showing of Mallett’s combine press conference. The one where he rudely states that he will not answer character related questions. If you watch the entire interview, which I have, you would see that Mallett’s comments had been taken out of context. He answered the first few character related questions. After answering the same question a few times, he finally said he would no longer answer them. However, the media kept asking and after a while he got a bit rude (I can’t blame him). While I do not know Ryan personally, it seems to me that a lot of his character concerns are a product of the media. There is nothing like character concerns to drop a player on draft day. In this scenario, the Dolphins benefit from Mallett’s misfortune.

2nd round

No Pick

3rd round

#15- Kendall Hunter RB

Typically, when a team drafts a QB in the 1st, they go and get him a LT with their next pick. Luckily, we have the best LT in the game so we can now focus on giving Mallett some weapons to work with. I seriously debated going receiver at this spot. This draft has a few very good receivers that should come off the board mid to late 2nd round. If one of them slips, we could be tempted, but ultimately, I think we pull the trigger on Kendall Hunter. I personally see Hunter as one of the best values in this entire draft. He lacks some height (5’7), but he is still 200 pounds with good speed. I have always been on the Kendall Hunter bandwagon and am not getting off now. Also, I think we should bring Ricky Williams back for a year to complement Hunter. I know that Brown is younger, but a power back that hesitates before hitting the hole is worthless to me.

#21 (from Eagles)- Clint Boling G

With this pick we help solidify the O-Line by bringing in one of the best LG prospects in the draft. Another guard I like in the 3rd is Orlando Franklin (out of The U), but I think he will be gone by this point in the draft. Boling is pretty athletic (played LT in college), which is a must in our offense. We ask our LG to pull, which is why Richie didn’t work out at LG (for the record- I have Richie as our starting C). Athleticism a big reason why I like Boling over John Moffitt (5.51 40 yard dash) for our O-Line at this point in the 3rd.

4th round

#7 (from Eagles)- Virgil Green TE

An excellent athlete for a TE. Yes, he is a bit of a project, but I think his potential is enormous. Green is a bit of a workout warrior. He has the best vertical and broad jump of any TEs at the combine as well as one of the best 40 yard dash times. He would be a very good receiving complement to Fasano’s blocking. I know a ton of people on this site like DJ Williams, who I strongly considered at this spot, but I like Green because he is bigger and has better physical tools than DJ Williams (not by much though).

#14- Edmond Gates WR

Edmond Gates is a bit like Green in that he is a bit of a project. Gates is a small school prospect with elite speed (4.35 at the combine). He reminds me of Johnny Knox of the Bears. They have the same height, weight, speed, and even went to the same school. Adding a speed threat across from Marshall (with Bess in the slot) will benefit Mallett and give him a young offense to grow with. And having Brian Hartline as a 4th receiver (in case of injury) is pretty darn good.

5th round

#15- DeMarcus Love OT/G

Love is a very good run blocker and will be an asset to our O-Line. One of the things I like most about Love is his versatility. He played OT in college and can play guard as well. Personally, I love him as a developmental prospect and think he will eventually do very well on our line. Have him sit and learn for a year before having him replace Carey at RT next season. Another option is taking a C like Jake Kirkpatrick here in case Richie does not work out at C, but I think Love will prove to be the better player.

6th round

#14- Noel Devine RB/KR/PR

The thing that frustrated me the most last season was the overall lack of speed all over the field. Putting Noel Devine on the field can certainly help fix that problem. I know that he is similar to Hunter in the respect that they are both undersized. However, I wouldn’t even play him at RB. He would take over all the return duties and add that homerun threat to our special teams we lost when we traded Ginn and his family. Another option at this spot is Da’Rel Scott who is essentially the same player as Devine just a bit bigger (but not as elusive which helps with PR)

7th round

#15- Eddie Jones OLB

To be honest, I really do not know anything about Jones. All I know is that he has pretty good size and went to Texas (who has recently produced some pretty good pass rushing OLBs). If Jones can develop into anything, we could eventually move Misi inside and trade Crowder.

#16- Brandon Saine RB

Personally, I do not understand why Saine is ranked so low as a prospect. He has very good size (220 pounds) and speed (4.40). He isn’t very elusive, but he is a good between the tackles runner. When I look at Saine, I see a young Pierre Thomas, just a solid all around football player. In a year or two (when Ricky Williams retires), Brandon Saine can be a very good complement to Kendall Hunter in the running game.

#34- Devon Torrence CB

Again, I don’t really know much about Torrence, but I do know that you can never have enough depth at CB.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I really like Butler's future and would like to see the team work out a way to keep him.

I just came across this quote. I had never seen it before, but have had the idea in the back of my mind for some time now. He honestly is a perfect fit and he is the best center we could add (realistically). Since the beginning of the season, I have wanted to add DeAndre Jordan over the summer. However, with the injury to Kaman, he has gotten more minutes and has played very well. A team will sign him for more than the MLE this offseason. Dalembert, while older, is actually a better fit for the Heat.

The Phinsider Offseason plan- including Mock Draft

This is my Mock Draft. The first sentence of each description until Miami will be why I think that particular team will pass on a QB. I am not going to project trades, but will indicate teams that I think are likely to trade down. Below is what I think the FO should do with the rest of the offseason. Please, feel free to comment. I have a feeling there will be many of you who disagree with me.

Pinstripe Alley Justin Upton

Hey guys. Before I begin, I want to start by saying that I am a huge Yankee fan (despite my username). I was born and raised in NY before moving to Florida a few years ago, so I have been a Yankee fan my entire life.

Now down to business. When I heard that Justin Upton was available, I started thinking of ways to get him. He is a great outfielder who is young, cheap (relatively), and still has potential. I've been thinking about this deal. Justin Upton for Dellin Betances, Austin Romaine, and Curtis Granderson. I know that sounds like a lot, but to get something, you have to give something up. I really think this deal would be fair for both teams. We get one of the top young hitters in the game. Who, from what I have heard is very capable of playing CF (Arizona had him playing RF because they had Chris Young before him). So, Upton could either replace Granderson in center or Gardner could move back to center (which I really like).

For Ariziona- They get a very good outfielder who is still pretty young and will only make about 5.5 mil this season. Granderson could either play center for them or he is more than capable (with his bat) of moving to a corner spot. Arizona would also get two very good prospects. I think Romaine is a very solid prospect who translates well to the Majors. I think he has a low bust rate. Good, young offensive catchers are very hard to find and Arizona woud get a good one in Romaine. And if you think about it, we have no place for Romaine to play down the road. I would like to move Montero to DH and have Romaine be the starting catcher (a few years from now), but that is not possible. We need to keep the DH position open because Jeter may need it down the road as will A-Rod. So, with Montero's bat at catcher, Romaine would be stuck with spot starts. Also heading to Arizona would be Dellin Betances. Betances is a great prospect who has Ace potential, but, lets face it, pitchers his size have a high bust rate and he is far away from making an impact in the majors.

Best of all, with this deal is we get to keep Gardner. I think he is more impactful player in addition to being younger than Granderson. Plus, he is much cheaper, better in the field, and more disruptive on the bases.

What do guys think of this deal?

Peninsula is Mightier Roster

Alright guys. I think it is really time to focus on what this team will end up looking like. This team currently has 19 players on it. With only 15 spots available, there are 16 players that I really would love to keep. So, I thought I would ask for other opinions.

This is the way I see it. Locks:

1. Wade

2. Haslem

3. Lebron

4. Bosh

5. Miller

6. Chalmers

7. Anthony

8. Arroyo

9. House

10. Big Z

The others (in no particular order):

11. Beverley

12. Butler

13. Hasbrouck

14. Howard

15. Jones

16. Magloire

17. Pittman

18. Randolph

19. Mason Jr.

Just read an article by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that many of you may be interested in. It isn't really anything that we didn't expect, but it confirms that Lebron will be playing some point and that at least 1 of the big 3 will be on the court at all times. Unless it is a blowout of course (there may be a few of those)

Peninsula is Mightier Opening game

Hey guys. I know people have been saying that the first game is at Orlando on the 28th. But I just read on realgm.com that we will open at Boston on the 26th. Don't know how true this is, but i guess we will find out tonight. I for one hope it is in Boston so we can show them opening night that we are for real. I know this post is really short, but just wanted to let everyone know what I read.

Also, I read that Lebron put an add thanking the city of Akron. This is too little to late. He should have put the add right after it happened. People are not going to appreciate it because Big Z did it a few days ago. But i guess those Cavs fans wouldn't have appreciated it anyway.

Peninsula is Mightier Kwame Brown

This sounds crazy, but bear with me for a second. I think Kwame Brown could thrive as the starting center with this team. He’s a very big and strong player who more than holds his own on the defensive end. I think he is very similar to Perkins and will look very good on this team playing D, rebounding, and blocking shots. Also, he would, most likely, be willing to play for the min. He is the only available player who has a shot at defending Dwight Howard. And if it doesn’t work, we didn’t spend a high pick on him. There is very minimal risk and I think it could pay off.

What do you guys think?
