True captain of the Phil Davis express.

Dan Hardy, while admirable for his heart, is a pure product of the UFC hype machine.

SIver finally making some believers out of people

Bring back Jeff Monson

MMAmania.com Tupac Alive and Well

Not really. But we got second best at Coachella this weekend.

Alongside Dre and Snoop and 50, we got a good as Tupac as there has ever been.

He was holographic, but he was there. It's crazy just how realistic and fluid the hologram looked and moved.

2Pac Live at Coachella 2012 (w/ Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre) (via drinkingfromthesun)

Yes folks, that's a hologram.

It is brought to us as a vision of Dre and a Hollywood team who has done the work for Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, TRON, Benjamin Button, etc. It took nearly 4 months and 1/2 a million dollars to complete with exact details and synchronized movements. He even begins to sweat after the first set..

Dre also has a tour in talk with the hologram Pac.

Brad Riddle vs Yi long.

Skip to 14:45 and watch in awe how he takes a handful of vicious shots and simply walks on.

The announcers also refer to him as being a Shaolin Monk.

MMAmania.com Professionalism vs Gumption

Nearly all sides of the spectrum have been discussed in the front page thread so I don't expect this to get much play, but i'll post it anyways. I simply cannot believe people complaining that "it wasn't his place."

Ufc00121_medium

via urdirt.com

UFC: 142 was an action packed fight card boasting six first round finishes, all the while showcasing some of the most brutal knockouts and submissions of any card in UFC history.

Between the blasting KO’s and dismembering of limbs one aspect of the night stood out beyond all others—The blatant incompetency of referee Mario Yamasaki.

Mario has been a mixed martial-arts referee since 1999 at UFC:20 "The Road to the Heavyweight Title" in Alabama. Coincidently that was also the inaugural event for Bruce Buffer’s "We are live" event introduction. Protecting fighters in over 200 sanctioned MMA bouts, Mario’s vast experience places him among the reffing elite and, rightfully so, he is head and shoulders above "tan" Dan Miragliotta and the reprehensible Steve Mazzagatti.

Outside of his refusal to acknowledge the nut-shot Matt Hughes suffered at the hands of "Twinkle Toes" in their second title fight at UFC: 52 "Dana White’s Favorite Fight….Ever" Mario is usually solid, and a referee of choice (as if there is one unless you are Brock Lesnar—may he RIP) for fighters. That being said, everyone makes mistakes.

The butterflies of victory had not yet begun to settle for Erick Silva in his return to Brazil after his knockout victory of Luis Ramos at UFC: 134, when Mario Yamasaki told the commission that he was robbing him of his obliteration of Carlos Prater, whom he had only moments ago beaten into a (T)KO stoppage in front of his home town crowd of Brazil’s finest.

The reason? Illegal Strikes to the back of the head.

Illegal_striking_zones_pic_large_medium

Silva hits Prater with a knee to the body then lands blistering shots ending the fight. It appears out of roughly eight (8) strikes that one (1) was possibly to the back of the head, while another one definitely being a glancing/skimming shot. Forearm down to hitting the side of the head (legal) is what ended the fight.

Now we get to the heart of the post—Joe "Balls-Mahoney" Rogan Rc7ipd

via mmahits.com

Joe Rogan, paid to call the fights like he sees them, did just that. He became the voice for everyone watching who has a minimum of 3 marbles rolling around in their proverbial noggin and immediately “called out” Mario right then and there, live in front of world.

It looked legal to me. Lets take a look. There you catch him. Theres one to the side. That’s legal. That’s legal. That’s legal. That’s legal. There’s one that strayed. These look like legal shots to me. These don’t look like legal shots to you? Mario, what was it about this that would make you want to make this a disqualification? It looks fine from here. It seems he is hitting the side of the head. That doesn’t look like the back of the head to me, man. One may have, it looks like he is going way out of his way to try to hit the sides of the head. Is this a judgment call, are you happy with this call? How are you feeling about this, I understand you have to decide in the moment? Look Mario Yamasaki is a great referee, but I think he made a mistake here.

Droves of fans are crying out that it was unprofessional of Rogan to call out the referee in such a public fashion. Personally, I applaud Joe for having the balls to do what he did, in the way that he did it. I liken it to watching an ABC special where they set up instances to see people’s reaction, or lack thereof. Joe, like the rest of us, saw bullshit and called a spade a spade. An immediate reaction is the best reaction.

Let’s face it, society at large is full of brainless sheeple whom rather shy away and walk on by than open their mouth or doing anything at all.

Nothing pisses me off more than an episode of Primetime: What would you do?<!--EndFragment-->

http://abc.go.com/watch/what-would-you-do/SH5555951

I can only imagine what “The Voice” and Co. would have came up with in defense of Yamasaki.

This isn’t the first time, either. Anyone remember Joe Rogan vs The Great Ice Spill of UFC: 109?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9IfSOxqC2I&feature=player_embedded#!

“There’s a lot of ice. This is a disaster. Oh no, they knocked the bucket over. This is the three stooges. What are you freaks doing. Everybody’s booing, now there is even more pressure…they’re sweeping it to the side, that’s good watch Arianny fall on her head…(at the stooges) YO there’s still ice. GET BACK IN THERE, YOU’RE NOT DONE…Those cornermen, someone needs to kick there ass.”

.

It wasn't his place there either, huh? Nor when a guy goes crazy on a show he simply hosts (much like he does for the UFC) and he restrains the nut.

Award for one, pink slip for another.

Joe Rogan showed what not only MMA needs, but society in general, and that sarah and gentleman, is balls. The gumption to call an idiot an idiot, and not sit idly by.

MMAmania.com Hermes Franca Sentenced to 3+ Years for...

Sexual Abuse and Unlawful Penetration.

Hermes Franca Barros, 37, pleaded guilty in Clackamas County Court on Wednesday to one count of unlawful penetration and one count of first-degree sexual abuse. He was sentenced to 3½ years in prison.

He was arraigned in May on seven counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of second-degree unlawful sexual penetration. The remaining counts were dismissed.

Barros will also have four and a half years of post-prison supervision and must register as a sex offender.

Barros, a resident of Jupiter, Fla., turned himself in to Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies in May after a warrant was issued for his arrest, stemming from a December 2010 encounter with one of his students.

Awaiting more details, but it seems as thought he molested a student, possibly.

@Dicker410 learn how spell dummy!! Assassination!!! The one you spelled is what must have happened to you in prison.

Double standard is the unjust application of different sets of principles for similar situations. The concept implies that a single set of principles encompassing all situations (a "single standard") is the desirable ideal.

Hypocrisy is the state of pretending to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that one does not actually have.

MMAmania.com Report: Brandon Vera returning to the UFC

Vera_nose_medium

And "The Truth" shall set you free. Or in this case, save your job.

Brandon Vera was unceremoniously dumped by the UFC after his three round beatdown at the hands of Thiago Silva back on Jan. 1 at the "Edgar vs. Maynard 2" event. The Brazilian's strong performance earned him a crack at "Rampage" Jackson and sent his counterpart to the hospital with a broken nose, pink slip in hand.

According to FiveOuncesofPain.com, among other news outlets, he might be on his way back.

That's because Silva may (or may not) have had the aid of some chemical courage heading into their light heavyweight bout.

And if the urine sample comes back from the lab with abnormalities, Vera just may be granted new life with the world's largest fight promotion.

Of course, results of the urine analysis are still pending and it should be noted that nothing is official at this time. But if true, is the UFC making the right decision in giving Vera another chance?

MMAmania.com Do the math: Greg Jackson responds to Dana White's criticism over camp's 'consistency'

Gregjackson_medium

Props: MMA Fighting

Quoteworthy:

"Here's a quick stat for you. So there's been 22 [UFC events] this year? We had 12 bonuses so far this year. So one out of every two, one of my fighters got 'Submission of the Night,' 'Knockout of the Night,' or 'Fight of the Night.' [Dana] wants to say there's a consistency? Okay, let's look at statistical consistencies. Let's look at Jon Jones, who has finished every fight with me in the first round, except for that Matt Hamill one, which would have been a first-round stoppage anyway if he hadn't thrown that illegal elbow. Let's look at Carlos Condit, who had Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night. Even people on the undercard who people don't really know yet. Kyle Noke, two finishes, both in the second round. Almost everybody on our team finishes consistently. It didn't bug me until Dana said it. Fans are fans, but Dana said that and, you know, I've worked really hard in his organization. If you look at my stats, they're insane. Imagine you give your life to something and then your boss comes up and says, 'Man, you suck.'"

World renowned mixed martial arts trainer Greg Jackson drops a mathematical bomb on UFC President Dana White's recent criticism over the consistency of the Jackson camp after Nate Marquardt phoned it in against Yushin Okami at UFC 122 back on Nov. 13. Jackson is often recognized for his shortcomings and not necessarily his success, which could in itself be an indication of how much he's accomplished in the few short years the fight guru has been sending his troops into battle. Anyone think his criticism was unwarranted? Or did his camp fail Nate Marquardt in his time of need?

MMAmania.com Shane Carwin: Don't Write Off Brock Lesnar Just Yet

Cain-wins3_medium

Props: Shane-Carwin.com

Quoteworthy:

"What Cain did is what great fighters do, they learn from what they can study. How would have my fight turned out if I had let Brock stand and knock him down again and again? It really doesn't matter about what happened last night or in July the only thing that matters is what is to be ... Those of you writing Brock off don't. The man walked into the UFC at the top level (who does that?) and won and defended the UFC HWT Belt. He took a beating from me and came back and found a way to win, he nearly lost his life and he came back and found a way to win, he is 4-2 in MMA and some of the wins are UFC title DEFENSES ... He is a real champion, a real warrior and as long as he keeps training and learning MMA he will continue to be a force. Every great champion will lose the great ones rise again and it would not surprise me to see Brock defending a title again one day. Win or lose he should be respected for being the warrior he is ... The UFC HWT division has an amazing crop of fighters right now with four worthy title holders (Cain, Brock, JDS and myself) and a lot of amazing talent knocking on door to get their name on the list for a title shot... This is going to be the era of the UFC HWTS and I am here to make a impact."

Former UFC Heavyweight number one contender Shane Carwin doesn't believe we've seen the last of Brock Lesnar as a major force int he UFC heavyweight division after coughing up his strap to undefeated Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 last Saturday night (Oct. 23) in Anaheim. "The Engineer" was almost the man to do it, until his body betrayed him in the second round, leaving him vulnerable to a Lesnar submission that sent him to the back of the line. Carwin still wants to be a force in this division -- will he be able to overcome the prodigious girth of Roy Nelson in 2011? And what fight awaits him if he does?

Cageside Seats Dave Bautista Interview

Great sit down with Dave Bautista.

MMBB: Well someone being so new to the sport, he’s by far the best or most dominant heavyweight out there.

Bautista: By far… well I wouldn’t say by far, I think Overeem is the best heavyweight.

MMBB: But could he stop Brock’s takedowns?

Bautista: I think he could beat Brock.  I do.   I think that Alistair Overeem is the best heavyweight in the world.  I really believe that!

He was very forth coming and honest about how negotiations are going and more importantly how training is going.  I thought his thinking Overeem would beat Brock was a good prediction that we will probably never see.

MMAmania.com Dana White on Mirko's eye, Mir's weight, Sonnen, and Todd Duffee

Dana White Talks UFC 119, Chael Sonnen, Steroids, Todd Duffee (via ArielHelwani)

For the 75 words, per usually, here is your news story

A Montana woman fended off a charging bear on her back porch early Thursday by using the first weapon she could reach — a piece of zucchini.

RelatedWATCH: Bear Kills Caretaker

The woman was stirred after midnight by a tussle in the backyard of her home near Frenchtown, Missoula County Sheriff's Lt. Rich Maricelli said. She went to investigate and found a 200-pound black bear attacking one of her two dogs, a 12-year-old collie.

The woman stood at her back door and screamed to divert the bear's attention from the dog. She told police the bear then charged her.

"The bear growled and was very aggressive and tried to come inside of her back door," Maricelli said.

The bear took a swipe at her with its paw and tore her jeans. The woman jumped back and grasped the nearest object on her kitchen counter inside the doorway — a 12-inch-long zucchini she had harvested earlier from her garden.

She flung the zucchini at the bear from a distance she estimated to be 3 feet. The vegetable bopped the bruin on the top of its head and the animal fled, Maricelli said.

12. On Alexander after he survived a barrage from Sokoudjou in Round 1: "He's still a little wobbly on his feet, ya know? Either that or he's got good rhythm."

7. After the fights, while straight man/babysitter Kruck was still on his way back to the broadcast table from a post-fight interview with Trevor Prangley: "That was like two hours of rough, hard sex. I need a cigarette and a tequila now."

6. On Keith Jardine's stance: "He's so awkward. He's like a rabid octopus. He looks like he's about to fall over at any time." Fortunately, Kruck didn't point out to him that an octopus, as a cold-blooded animal, cannot get rabies.

5. Obviously no stranger to viral video sensation "Double Rainbow Guy," during a particularly memorable exchange with Rutten:
"Double rainbow! Triple rainbow! Double secret probation! ... No, no, no, it's gonna go into triple double overtime!" Kruck saved the day by reminding the viewers, and Frye, "There is no overtime in Shark Fights."

4. During a discussion with Rutten over their records:
"I started counting fights when I'd come home drunk and knock my old lady around," to which Kruck, ever the straight-man, quickly covered for him by saying, "I bet she's got a few wins over you, too."

3. On his background as a wrestler: "Look at me: I'm a wrestler. My balls are so big, I wear the excess on my hat."

2. On cauliflower ear: "This guy's tough. His ears are like potatoes. Looks like he got stuck in the birth canal, had to beat him out with a stick."

MMAmania.com Sean Sherk: 'Evan Dunham won't do anything that I haven't seen or had done to me before'

Sherk-belt_medium

Props: UFC.com (via Bloody Elbow)

Quoteworthy:

"What I do works and I'm not going to change it now. I don't think (Evan Dunham) is going to do anything in the cage that I haven't seen or had done to me before. I've literally fought the best of the best in this industry for a very long time. I've fought for world titles in two different weight classes. I don't see him beating me at any aspect of the game. My striking is faster, it's crisper. My wrestling is better, my jiu-jitsu is better. There’s a lot of hungry kids out there, I’m hungry too. I want it. I've been there already. I’ve' had that belt. I loved it. I loved being world champion. I want that again."

Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk (33-4-1) looks to begin his path back to the mountaintop against up-and-coming division prospect Evan Dunham at UFC 119 in Indianapolis. The oft-injured "Muscle Shark" has been criticized for abandoning his roots (wrestling) which was a big factor is his divisional dominance for so many years in favor of a new stand-up attack that favored him in a UFC 90 bout against Tyson Griffin but cost him in a battle of the mitts against Frankie Edgar at UFC 98. Will he be the old Sherk in Indy? Or just old?

MMAmania.com Early Numbers for 118

Dave Meltzer

In estimates we have at press time, trending figures indicated about 570,000. In looking at certain systems that we have contacts with, the numbers were a little above Liddell vs. Franklin (which did 520,000), which would indicate 550,000 to 600,000. But keep in mind both of those indicators pointed to far larger numbers for Silva vs. Sonnen then ended up materializing, but have been accurate predictors in the past. DirecTV numbers, which are the first real figures to come out, indicated a final figure around 600,000, but those numbers indicated a much bigger number than materialized last time. But as we say every time, any figures in the first two weeks are at best estimates.

Based on the reaction we got, the show didn't do all that well at the movie theaters. ...

Bar reports we had were that places were packed for the most part. About half were strong, one-quarter were way down and one-quarter were usual for a non-major show.

I had originally predicted 750,000 buys when the show was announced, but I was counting on the boxer vs. MMA gimmick catching on bigger than it did. Unlike the 8/7 show, where the buildup made me rethink upwards, I was down to thinking 550,000 by fight time, thinking the only boost would be that ESPN Sports Center was playing up the boxer vs. MMA fighter angle, and that could lead to late curiosity buys. But when Toney showed up looking out of shape, I could sense people thinking back to all the bad boxing heavyweight matches with older guys that were such a turnoff. Plus, when Toney took off his pants and his underwear rode down, it made him a comedy figure instead of a really hated guy people wanted to pay to see get shut up by the beloved veteran who did show up in shape. The dynamic I expected to be there wasn't. Plus, even though B.J. Penn has been a big draw the past two years and is one of the company's most popular fighters, and his losing his title and trying to regain it is on paper a strong drawing dynamic, people didn't care about Edgar. Edgar comes from the amateur wrestling mentality when it comes to promoting a fight and himself, and it makes him a tough sell as a headliner. Plus, their first fight was exciting in the sense it was a close fight and you didn't know who was going to win, it was not the kind of fight most fans want to see.

These numbers, once confirmed, will be exactly on track with what I was guestimating.  550-620K is where I was at, and I think Jay was a tad above around 700. Hey Kevin, do you remember the thread??  I wish i knew the name of it lol!  Definitely NOT at, near, or surpassing 1 million.

Poor prelim numbers and good but not near great PPV numbers.

MMAmania.com Natural Aces?

Please, Silva, put this fight together.   Randy and Rich are company guys, they do "favors," for the UFC all the time, they are both legends (Franklin will be in the HOF next round) and both are still great fighters even tho their prime champ days are behind them. I think this could end up to be FOTN.

This fight makes sense (wheres Freenow to disagree).  This would be a great fight and do decent in buys-not great-but decent.  MATCH the winner/loser (s) up with the winner/loser (s) of the Bones/Forrest fight.

Per usual, to meet the 75 word limit, here is your random news story of the day.

DEA seeks experts in ebonics.

By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 47 mins ago

ATLANTA – Federal agents are seeking to hire Ebonics translators to help interpret wiretapped conversations involving targets of undercover drug investigations.

The Drug Enforcement Administration recently sent memos asking companies that provide translation services to help it find nine translators in the Southeast who are fluent in Ebonics, Special Agent Michael Sanders said Monday.

Ebonics, which is also known as African American Vernacular English, has been described by the psychologist who coined the term as the combination of English vocabulary with African language structure.

MMAmania.com Round Table Discussion: StrikeForce Edition

Havent messed around with one of these RTD's in awhile.  Lets start off by giving StrikeForce its deserved props.  Great night of fights for FREE-can't get much better than that, and actually the commentating wasn't as bad as we've come to expect. Alright lets get into it.

Noons/Gurgel proved, yet again, that Jorge is more intrigued in putting on a "fight for the fans," and forgo any intelligent game plan.  Personally, I absolutely hate when fighters do this.  Gurgel, Sherk (as of late), Kongo, KOS (bar Daley), and a few others that are escaping my mind, not only don't use their strengths but completely abandon them all together-even when losing. It baffles me.  As far as the late/illegal knee/punch goes-I MISSED it.  I was distracted making a stiff drink for myself and a lady friend (who pretended to stay intrigued in the fights until it was over and we headed out for the night), and I didnt have the DVR recording. So fill me in.

KJ will probably get Gilbert next, So maybe Diaz is being set up with Daley.

kennedy/Jacare turned out to be just as CLOSE as I and many others expected. I chuckled when Souza was walking out and it was said "This is the guy Shields was offered to fight and refused two times, before being released."  I again chuckled post fight interview when Tim was billed as "Green Beret Sniper with over 200 firefights." Some are saying they thought it was boring and too slow, but I thought it was a good fight.  Tim only went for 4 takedowns (3 completed) and I thought if he would have implemented his wrestling a little more, and would have cemented a win had he done so. Tough fight and tho I thought Tim would come away with the split decision upset victory, i didnt have complaints about the result.   Jacare was doing a little talking during the fight but he better keep being the big fish in a small pond, because he'd get eaten up in the UFC. ALSO, I was under the impression SF was going to be holding a tournament for the MW belt-an idea I was liking.  We'll probably end up seeing Miller/jacare again.

King Mo/Feijao proved exactly what I was saying after the Mo/Mousassi fight. King Mo, while full of talent, is not ready to be lumped in with the ELITE 205lbers.  The division is simply so stacked and too deep for Mo, right now, to be in the top 7-8. He did show some improvements in his striking tho.  Some very nice shots and was working the body fantastic.  Feijao looked bigger than Mo and was throwing some bombs, but even more impressive was his TDD. Even when Mo dumped him on his head and popped back up, seemingly, immediately.  Mo go a little too confident in testing out his improving standup and he ate a HUGE knee and right hook that literally flat-backed him.  You can't say the dude has a weak chin tho, he took solid, hard shots and wasn't OUT.  Big John stepped in at the right time, those elbows were brutal.  We actually have an interesting match looming with Feijao/Babalu and Im hoping they pair up Mo/Hendo as well.

*Notable mention goes to Chadd Riggs for crushing the Bobby Lashley wagon and sending him out on a gurney to the local hospital.  Sadly, Lashley/Bautista looks more plausible.

*Also, there was some hubub about Noons and Mo using pure oxygen inhalers in between rounds.  is this written in the rules as illegal?
