Steve Young is a complete mormon that has no clue about football whatsoever. How he ever played quarterback for the 49ers, won multiple playoff games and a Super bowl I'll never know. He especially has no business commenting on the 49ers current QB Alex Smith. Suggesting that Smith might need to practice to become a better NFL quarterback is just absurd! And he's not very smart!

-Q: When you were playing, did you ever miss camp time due to a contract situation?

-SINGLETARY: Absolutely.

-Q: What was the longest time you missed?

-SINGLETARY: Maybe three weeks.

-Q: Was that your rookie year or was it when you were a veteran?

-SINGLETARY: My rookie year of course I was drafted in the second round and thought that I should’ve been in the first round. So yes, I held out for a week.

The second time I held out was after my fifth year, actually, before my fifth year, the year we went to the Super Bowl. And the general manager and myself had a conversation during negotiations and it worked out totally different than he thought it was.

I’m a guy of principle. I was prepared to sit out for the whole duration. But it worked out, thank God for that.

February 08, 2007:

QB Marve highlights Shannon's first class

University of Miami coach Randy Shannon has a tough-love approach to recruiting.

"We told every player, 'We're recruiting you this year. Next year, we're going to find a guy to replace you,'" Shannon said.

Despite the turmoil caused by a turbulent 2006 season, Shannon managed to pull in a strong class by getting several players to change their oral commitments to other schools and sign with Miami.

Quarterback Robert Marve and receiver Jermaine McKenzie switched from Alabama to UM. Defensive back Demarcus Van Dyke committed to Florida but signed with the Hurricanes. Defensive back Joseph Nicolas swapped Rutgers for Miami.

The most celebrated member of UM's recruiting class is Marve, the state's 2007 Mr. Football who played at Tampa-Plant.

Marve, who broke many of the state high school records held by Florida freshman Tim Tebow, wasn't even recruited by Miami until Alabama fired Mike Shula as coach.

July 17, 2007:

Robert Marve suffers a badly injured left hand after the car he was traveling in flipped over on I-75 near Naples, Fl. He was not driving. His injuries, which included a broken left wrist, deep lacerations on his hand and a dislocated left ring finger, force Him to redshirt his freshman season. Luckily all injuries were to his non-throwing hand.

Miami QB Marve Arrested On Misdemeanor Charges

Miami freshman quarterback Robert Marve is facing misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest without violence and minor criminal mischief.

Miami Police spokesman Delrish Moss said Saturday that the former Plant High star was arrested late Wednesday in the Coconut Grove neighborhood after he became upset and broke a car mirror.

A police officer walking by saw Marve damage the car and approached him. Marve tried to run away, but was caught and taken into custody without incident. He signed a promise to appear in court later and was not taken to jail.

August 23, 2008:

QB Robert Marve suspended for UM's opener

University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve has been suspended for the Hurricanes' season-opener against Charleston Southern on Thursday, his father confirmed Saturday.

Marve's father, Eugene, a former NFL linebacker, said he was told Saturday that his son would not play in the opener, but will return for UM's game at Florida on Sept. 6.

The suspension is the result of Robert Marve's arrest last October in Coconut Grove when he was charged with two misdemeanors - resisting arrest without violence and criminal mischief - after he punched and broke a car mirror then tried to elude police by running away.

"We're all very upset by this," Eugene Marve said before declining to comment further.

At the time, (coach Randy)Shannon said no action would be taken against Marve.

"Sometimes I think what we do is just throw kids to the wolves instead of helping them out," Shannon said. "We're going to help the kid out."

December 18, 2008:

Hurricanes QB Robert Marve won't play in bowl game

Robert Marve's rocky tenure at the University of Miami continued Thursday with the announcement that the freshman quarterback is suspended for the Hurricanes' Emerald Bowl game against California on Dec. 27.

UM coach Randy Shannon declined to discuss the specifics of Marve's suspension except to say it was because of a violation of team policy.

Eugene Marve, Robert's father and a former NFL linebacker, said his son had been disciplined because he missed several classes this semester.

"You're always disappointed when (suspensions) occur," Shannon said. "But our job is to teach him and (Marve will) learn from it. He'll bounce back and we'll keep going."

Speculation regarding Marve's availability for the bowl game has been raging for more than a week, but Shannon said he made the decision Thursday to suspend the quarterback.

There have also been persistent rumors that Marve, who has shared the quarterback job with Harris all season, is considering transferring from UM.

One UM source said last week that Marve was being "shopped around" to other schools.

Asked if his son was contemplating playing elsewhere, Eugene Marve said: "My expectation is that Robert will be at Miami next year."

Attempts to reach Marve for further comment were unsuccessful.

"This is a growing thing," Shannon said in reference to Marve. "He's a freshman. You got to get them guys understanding. It takes time for certain guys."

December 29, 2008:

Patrick Nix ousted as Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator

University of Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix was dismissed Monday after a season in which the Hurricanes finished 89th in the nation in total offense and had problems with clock management -- most recently in the Emerald Bowl.

Nix, who spent two years on the job, said he wanted to run a more wide-open offense than coach Randy Shannon allowed.

UM quarterback Robert Marve, who had a good relationship with Nix, also is expected to leave the program. Florida, Tennessee and LSU are among the top options for Marve.

Quarterback Robert Marve is leaving Miami, ending weeks of speculation about his future and adding to the tumultuous start of the Hurricanes' offseason.

"I had to get out," Marve told the AP from his family's home in Tampa. "I just decided that I can't play for coach Shannon."

The release comes with conditions that don't sit well with Marve. He can't play for teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southeastern Conference or the state of Florida. It's not unusual for programs to place restrictions on the deal when a marquee player transfers.

Marve said he will try to fight to soften the terms of the release. He is appealing Miami's decision, and a university review panel is expected to hear his side in the coming days. Marve wants to enroll somewhere new in January.

"It doesn't make any sense," Marve said.

Shannon wished Marve well in a brief statement released by the school.

"I have respect for Robert and wish him nothing but success in the future," Shannon said.

Marve told The AP that, while it's disappointing to sit out another year, his body can use the time to continue healing from the crash.

"I don't think people realize how hurt I was," Marve said. "My body changed completely after that."

The University of Miami granted Robert Marve a release to transfer Tuesday, but don't expect the 19-year-old quarterback to go quietly -- not with coach Randy Shannon fueling more controversy with his release stipulations.

Marve's father, former NFL linebacker Eugene Marve, said he and his family are infuriated with UM's transfer conditions and that he will initiate the appeals process.

''Shannon is trying to bar Robert from playing for any [Atlantic Coast Conference] school or any [Southeastern Conference] school or any school in Florida,'' Eugene Marve told The Miami Herald in a phone interview. ``This goes in relationship with his contempt for and arrogance toward my son, Robert.

``Shannon gave him the release with that stipulation. I've never heard of that before. The ACC [ban] is reasonable. The SEC is ridiculous. There are a lot of schools in the SEC that never see Miami. This has gone to a personal attack against my son, and it will not go without challenge. This is a shameful day that Shannon has brought to the University of Miami. This is a shameful day for Randy Shannon and what he represents, and every recruit should watch out for what you're seeing happening to Robert Marve.

``Robert expressed his displeasure, and right now we are in our information-gathering. We're going to fight this tooth and nail. I don't know why Shannon would want to bring this type of disgrace to [UM] and himself in trying to dominate my son and have control over his decision. If he perceived Robert as that big of a threat as a football player, he certainly didn't treat him like that.''

Shannon released a two-sentence statement: ``When Eugene Marve speaks, he has Robert's welfare in mind, which all fathers should. I have respect for Robert and wish him nothing but success in the future.''

Eugene Marve said Robert requested a release to transfer ``because coach Randy Shannon has shown my son no respect and no relationship, and, in turn, there is no trust in anything Coach Shannon did. They never had a relationship. Even the first time I talked to him, I asked him to support my kid because Robert was constantly saying there was no support for him. He's leaving because of a bad relationship and no trust.''

The news of Marve's departure came the day after Shannon fired offensive coordinator Patrick Nix.
