I was rolling through Yahoo! News front page today and surprised to find a link to a (RedRaiderSports.com) story. Tech recruit J.J. Bynum, from College Station, recently legally changed his last name in honor of his mother, who raised him as a single mother. Read the full story... its a good one and will get you excited about inviting these folks into the Red Raider family.

Some pictures have popped up (Courtesy of DoubleT 104.3 Lubbock) of a silver TTU helmet and black matte TTU helmet used to woo recruits last weekend. (click on link for pictures)

Considering that the school has taken more uniform chances in the last two years, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see these tried out in 2012.

So What do you think?

I know a lot of traditionalists hate the new trend in college football of trying out all kinds of bold new unis (Oregon, Okie Light, Maryland, Arizona State, to name a few). And I agree that the traditional powerhouse schools like Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc need to stick to tradition and keep their old school look.

But I think for some of the smaller market schools, new uniform trends (like the black matte helmets that many schools tried this year) really appeal to 17-19 year old recruits.

I for one, am all for trying out new looks if it will appeal to the young recruits out there who like all the new fads. The white helmets we used this year (without the stripes) were pretty sharp, and silver helmets (although strange since they've never been part of our school colors) would look pretty cool as well. And the black matte would be an improvement, in my opinion, on the current black glitter "bass boat paint" helmets we currently use.

Great interview with Baron Batch in the Chronicle. I have been following BB's blog for a few years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it...This is a kid well beyond his age in terms of wisdom and maturity. No matter what he ever accomplishes in the NFL, I'm a fan of BB because of the outstanding person he is because of what he's persevered through, what he's accomplished on the field, what he's accomplished as a humanitarian, and the obstacles he's overcome to pursue his NFL dreams. Proud to call myself a fellow Techsan when I read about an alum like this.

Double-T Nation Give Tubs a Chance (I must be a glutton for punishment)

I've been a member of Double-T Nation for a very long time, and used to be a frequent voice here. Seth runs one of the best fan blogs on the internet, and I still stop by here to read his comments daily.

But I've been avoiding the message boards on this site for almost a year now, because I don't agree with most of you.

Double-T Nation More expansion rumors and the genetically enhanced Longhorn.

A&M to SEC? (Again?)

New rumors are surfacing (again) regarding the aggies growing desire to jump ship and give a giant middle finger to the $300 million deal UT cut with ESPN recently.

This story was run in the Austin Chronicle yesterday. Thought it was pretty funny how the first comment was from a guy having a mental breakdown because he didn't realize it was an April fool's day joke! Pretty funny read, though.

Double-T Nation Dallas Cowboys Website also reporting Tech-Alabama Game at Jerryworld

Dallas Cowboys Website also reporting Tech-Alabama Game at Jerryworld

I know this really doesn't have any new information from what has already been reported, but interesting since it comes from the venue itself.  Just seems suspect to me since these meetings have obviously happened, but Myers reports that the deal is pretty much done and Alabama denies they were ever interested.

Reminds me of a few months ago when the 2010 season was being discussed and the Tech-UT game was being considered again in early September.  Gerald made public statements (apparently before the deal was ever finalized) saying the deal done.  TTU even released a 2010 schedule (prematurely) indicating the game was set in stone.  The next day Mack Brown was on TV saying he'd never heard anything about it and UT said they already had another non-conference game scheduled on that date.

Not a real big deal I guess, but very unprofessional.  Its like the guy everyone knows that just can't keep a secret, is giggling with excitement to get it off his chest, and just picks up the phone and tells everyone he knows.  Premature Exaggeration, I guess.

Double-T Nation Dear Pirate Mob....

I know a lot of you will disagree with this, and that's cool.  This is a very tough time for the TTU fanbase.  But after reading some of the outlandish angst here (like relating the admin's actions to habitual spousal abuse), I thought I would (attempt) to offer some perspective.  Most of the following came from comments I made in other posts...just wanted to share with everyone.

Double-T Nation If Tech Hires Tubby...

If Tech hires Tubby...you can expect Ruffin to go.  Make no mistake about it, Tommy Tuberville is a defensive minded coach, and will work to strengthen the defense.  This is a good thing.  If we could keep just 70% of our offensive prowess and turn our defense into something that resembles an SEC defense, we are automatically at the UT or OU level of the Big XII South.

I was trying to find the link to the article I read here on DTN a few days ago where Tubby even hinted at these intentions.  Something to the effect of wanting to keep the offense intact (my take: make Riley the OC) but change a lot of things on defense to take us to the next level (my take: get rid of Ruff and bring in a DC he has ties to).  He would maybe even offer Ruffin a different role on the defense, but I can't see Ruff as Tubby's DC.

I could be way off base here...just my gut feeling.  But if I'm right, it would really suck for Ruff.  Great coach, mentor and recruiter.  And I think there would be further backlash from a very large portion of the fanbase who already feel Ruff should be the next head coach anyway, and then to have him canned soonafter the Captain.....would be disasterous.  I would hope the thought of this alone would be enough for Tubby to keep Ruff on staff and mentor his defense to the next level, but I doubt it.

But then again, all of this is based on the speculation of Tubby being hired in the first place.  We all know Sonny is next in line.....(sarcasm font on)

Double-T Nation The * gets Bigger and Bigger....

UT assistant coaches received bonuses for playing in the 2008 Big XII championship game.   Wonderful for them.  I wish I could get a bonus for doing accomplishing imaginary feats at work.  I sure wouldn't complain about it.  I guess my boss would just have to be a real arrogant prick who feels I earned something for the company that the rest of the outside world didn't recognize.  Amazing.  But such is the arrogant fantasy land that UT lives in.

Double-T Nation NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP-CALIBER PLAY TODAY

Finally.......

A Texas Tech team rises to the challenge and plays up to expectations under the national spotlight.  The critics have been calling us out all year, as always, and to a certain extent they had a case to argue.

Tech has perenially choked in big games where they needed to prove a point.  As much as it kills me to admit it, even the chronically delusional Beergut over at "I am the 12th Man" had a valid argument by prediciting

A loss to Kansas would show that "Typical Tech" is still alive and well.

Well, do you hear that?  The sweet sound of silence?  The critics have been silenced not by speculative predictions or strength of schedule or "tradition of winning" or anything else.  The critics have been silenced by a dominant performance on the football fieldAnd not just by our juggernaut offense but by our improved defense that no one wanted to believe existed.

But forget the critics, they've been wrong all year and now they'll jump on the bandwagon and say that Tech is for real.  The bigger picture here is an empty canvas signifying Tech's future and what can be accomplished.

Today we saw before our very eyes what we've been talking about being possible for years.  We saw the Texas Tech Red Raiders play up to FULL POTENTIAL.

I really don't like to use the cliche, but we really were clicking on all cylinders today, and if we can somehow bring that intensity to the football field for the remainder of the season, this is a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP-CALIBER TEAM.  The talent is definitely there, with enough seniority and more than enough talent to fill virtually every position.  Its simpliy a matter of execution

Up to today's game, the execution has been poor.  Instead of overachieving like Tech teams have been doing for years, this year's immensely talented team had been underachieving horribly.

And then, on October 26th, 2008, in Lawrence, Kansas, the sleeping giant was awoken and unleashed the full potential of its fury.  Complete, total, brutal domination.

Touchdowns on 9 of 10 possessions.  556 total yards and 29 first downs.  2 forced and recoverd fumbles.  Three interceptions.  Constant pressure on the quarterback.

This Texas Tech team can beat ANYONE in this country if they play with the intensity and fire they showed today.  Its time we push the throttle to the limit and play every single down like it is the last.

Ultimately our goal is a Big XII title and National Championship.  In order to achieve it, we have to play the remaining schedule with near perfection, something we have rarely seen at Tech.  If nothing else, today's game put  that perfection on a national stage and opened many people's eyes as to what this team is truly capable of.  Hopefully it will also infuse the confidence into this football team to steam roll with that same intensity from here on out.  If so, this is a very, very attainable goal.

Get those guns up, Raider faitfull, this is going to be a lot of fun.

Double-T Nation Amendola Drops Ball in First Preseason Game

I know its still way to early, but for the rookies on the team, the preseason is what makes or breaks......so I hope this doesn't hurt Danny Amendola's chances of making the roster........

SAN DIEGO - Cowboys rookie wide receiver Danny Amendola showed a nice burst on the first punt return of his NFL career, then fumbled his next attempt with 5:39 left in the first quarter which led to a Chargers touchdown.

The Cowboys' special teams struggles continued in Saturday's 31-17 preseason loss to the Chargers, particularly in punt and kickoff coverage - an area that was inconsistent at times last season.

The Chargers averaged 20.5 yards on four punt returns, and speedy Darren Sproles had a 25-yard kickoff return.

"I thought our special teams didn't play well," Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said. "They're a very good special teams (unit) and we knew that going in. We did look at a lot of people. We didn't punt the ball well to help our special teams and then our kickoff returns weren't real good. It's something that we need to address."

Double-T Nation Aggie Expectations

(Copied this from a reply to another fanpost.)

Wow. I seem to remember a time…was it back in 1999….when every single aggie I knew was hailing Coach Fran as the second coming of Christ. And there was hardly any basis or resume for those inflated projections.

Now all of those same friends (and most of Aggieland for that matter) have sworn him off as the anti-Christ, blaming him almost entirely for their demise over the past decade. Does he deserve the criticism….probably to an extent. But still kinda reveals how blind aggie fans can be to hail anything and then tuck and run moments later.

Its good to see, however, that aggies are much more hesitant to jump on the Sherman bandwagon and are showing some extremely rare aggie restraint before boasting and bragging about their shiny new coach. I think Sherman will be pretty good, not great…but I wonder if a pro-style offense can work in the Big XII…...we all saw how that worked out for Coach Callahan at Nebraska…..........
