Second City Hockey Penalty Kill Advanced Statistics

I was curious to see how our penalty killers stacked up against one another and how the addition of Luke Schenn would add to our Penalty Kill. Here are some data from Behindthenet.ca. After the jump, I'll do a mediocre statistical analysis which CNS and Hack (among countless others) will tell me how stupid I am but until then, enjoy the read. Fun stuff after the jump...
*The Hawks, a team with cap space to use, are interested in Kings d-man Jack Johnson... It is curious to me if there is a fit there for LA however. The Kings want a top 6 forward and a d replacement (not of jj's caliber of course). One source told me he expected there to be "another team involved and I wouldn't e surprised if it was a three-way deadline deal...the kind we have seen the Kings get involved with before."
We are definitely in the market for a dman, Johnson is a name that's out there. He averages 16 minutes a game this year, only 1 minute 33 seconds (5th best) in terms of SHTOI. I'm guessing this is hot air, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Second City Hockey December Minor League Update

Hello folks it's me again, your least favorite Fan Shots writer because I write about things most people don't care about: Minor League players :). I kid, but not really. Most of these players are a ways away and the best of the players are playing in the World Juniors. Which I do follow but I'll let someone else cover that because I don't have the time but the following players are there.

US: Brandon Saad, Adam Clendening, Stephen Johns

Sweden: Ludvig Rensfeldt, Johan Mattsson, Joakim Nordstrom

There are two tables: December's stats (from the last post to game's played on Dec 27th) and the full season stats.

Second City Hockey Hawks Minor League Update

Figure I could do a table of the Hockey's Future Top 20 along with the guys from the 2011 draft. It's sorted currently by position in the HF list; however, if you have a request of a player I'll be happy to add a player.

Our 2011 draft is looking very good as Brandon Saad and Mark McNeil have impressed scouts but one name you might not have heard too much about is Hawks 2nd round pick Adam Clendening. Clendening leads the Boston U Dmen in points and assists and leads the team in Penalty minutes (34).

Major injuries have affected the Hawks minors with Kyle Beach out the year (4 to 6 months of recovery time) and some sites have questioned whether he'll be passed by the depth in the system due to shrewd trades and drafting.

Also hurt is wunderkind Brandon Saad. Saad, out since November 1st, blocked a shot with his left hand and has not returned. His injury has been classified as "week to week" but it was estimated he'd miss a week or two. Unfortunately it's been three and he's not returned to action but should return to action soon.

Second City Hockey OGVT

So I got bored and decided what is one way that I could make my life fun for an hr or so.  So I decided to try to hand calculate a stat that is famous on PP (In retrospect I probably should've just contacted him and asked, he's apparently really cool and forthcoming with the #s).  Anyhow, I was going to do GVT, or an attempt to look at a player's value on the ice.  There are a few shortcomings for instance it's heavily team dependent, that could also be seen as a relative strength.  The method basically centers the variables by team.  Teams that score a lot of goals are given no more weight than teams that don't score any.  In fact, it's better to be a guy who scores a lot on a low scoring team than it is to be a guy who scores a lot on a high scoring team.

Anyhow, I did the Blackhawks OGVT, if you want more info check out the below link... #s after the jump
