Wagner Mateo?

Here is the saga on Wagner Mateo. It's interesting. Now it sounds as though the Giants aren't going to sign him. Why don't we take the money we saved on Mark Teahan through the trade (approx $2.5 mill) and throw some of it at him? Is he worth the risk? So far we've not been linked to him at all which makes this something that will probably not happen. But I'm curious to the consensus of RR.

Now let me get this straight. They canceled the game today because it was too cold? Comonman. That is why people have the perception that baseball players, out of the four major sports are sissies. Are you kidding me? It's cold? Put on some thermal wear and go out there and play. I understand snow, rain. I got it. But cold? Are you kidding me? ......That's what I'm saying. Baseball players are sissies...... put on a skull cap man and go out there and pitch.

So Olivo is projected to be a Type B free agent... what do we do with him? "Under the terms of his deal, Olivo will make $2.7 million. The mutual option for 2010 is believed to be worth $3.25 million." (USA Today) So does he ask to come back? Does he not pick up his half of the option? Do the Royals deny the option and offer him arbitration?

So while I was browsing yesterday I managed to catch this post from MLBTraderumors.com. In this article it talks about some of the possible players on the trade market for this offseason.

These players are as follows:

Roy Halladay
Carl Crawford
B.J. Upton
Felix Hernandez
Josh Johnson (TBC player profile as SBN didn't load a profile for him)
Adrian Gonzalez
Javier Vazquez
Milton Bradley

I'm sure there are more that are out there. For example, Joe Mauer is going to be a 2010 FA. Here's my question and I hope we get some good discussion on this. If you could trade for one of these players, who would it be, who would you give up from our organization, and why? Please let's keep this to trades, not free agents. Thanks.

Who is Anthony Lerew?

Well, for starters, he's your Kansas City Royals starting pitcher for today against the Boston Red Sox. Lerew is a 2001 11th rounder who was signed by J.J. Picollo while with the Atlanta Braves. Anthony is a former Baseball America Top Prospect for the Carolina League. In 2004 he was the #5 prospect in the Atlanta Braves pipeline.

In parts of 3 big league seasons, Lerew is 0-2 while pitching in 11 games. Lerew has started 3 career games. Lerew finished the Naturals season strong including a complete game shutout in the first round of the Texas League Divisional Series.

Lerew signed with the Royals after being released by the Braves. Anthony had Tommy John surgery in 2007. According to him, he throws a fast, change, and slider.

I saw him pitch one time this season at Springfield. This is what I wrote.

Anthony Lerew started the game. He is a very fast worker and sprints onto the field when it's his turn to go to the mound. He throws a pitch about ever 8 to 10 seconds. Very fast worker. Lerew threw a 4-seam, 2-seam, change, and curve. It's more of a slurve type pitch. The 4 seam clocked in from 92-96 on the stadium gun. (I asked some scouts how off the stadium gun was, and the consensus was 3 mph) So Lerew was really 89-93 on the Stalker with the 4-seam. His 2-seam had about 2-3 inches of armside run clocking in at 88-92 Stalker. The change had minimal armside run and was a very good pitch for him when down. The change clocked in at 80-82. And the slurve was a good pitch as well. It had good gloveside movement and made some guys chase. The slurve went from 72-76. Lerew's mechanics are slightly herky-jerky and he looked a little awkward at times with the offspeed stuff. But he managed to stay in control and pull a W in 7.0 innings. He is a contact guy posting only 2 Ks versus 1 BB. Gave up 5 hits and 3 Runs/2 Earned. Oh, he had 9 ground ball outs... so I think he's a GB type pitcher using that 2 seam to sink.

Cold: Nothing can be worse the the Indians 0-7 week vs. the A's and Twins. Pittsburgh and Toronto kept pace with Washington winning only a single game and losing five.

Kansas City: The Royals had another hot week coupling last week's 6-1 with a 4-2 record making the last 2 weeks a bizarre September blazing of 10-3.

Gotta love the Royals. When it matters, we fold, when nothing matters but the top pick, we're stellar.
